We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have been interested in photography for as long as I can remember. I think partly because I hated having my picture taken myself so I wanted to be the one taking the picture instead. I was always quiet growing up, and taking pictures as a way of expressing myself intrigued me.
What I’ve found is that photography is more then just capturing an image of how you look right now. A good photo, a good session, will capture the entire moment and emotion and stage of life. I started seriously learning my camera and techniques after my first child was born. I didn’t want to forget all those little details. That is partly why I was drawn to photographing families. Children grow up so fast, I want to freeze a moment in time, with all the smiles and giggles and tiny hands of the littles to the silliness and adventuring spirits as they grow bigger. The snuggles, how everyone interacts and looks at each other, all those connections that define a family. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I am not great at words, but I love giving those moments a voice through my images.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Honestly, I am a very small operation. I have been running my photography business on the side in addition to a full-time office job in the mental health field along with having two young kiddos at home. Balancing everything has been a challenge and I often do all my editing late into the night after everyone has gone to bed. To help keep me from burning out, I do limit the amount of sessions I schedule, even during the busy fall season. Despite the small amount of sessions, I have families that return every year and who recommend me to others. I primarily gain work from recommendations and word-of-mouth. I have also been published in several photography magazines, including as a cover artist and as a featured artist.

I am currently in a period of transition, as my place of full-time employment has suddenly closed. This might be the time to push more into my business, to take the risk to expand and grow. I guess we’ll see if I am up for this next challenge.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man. I have a best friend who lives in Washington state and loves hiking and exploring. So we would probably need a couple days in Rocky Mountain National Park at least in order to hit up the trails. I especially want to get her up to Dream Lake. She is also a lover of coffee, and there are so many wonderful local coffee shops to check out. I’d start with Muse, FeelLove, and Dark Heart. For food, we’d definitely need to hit up Henry’s, Door 222, and Casa Real. To top it off, we’d need to check out some local comedy shows. The Comedy Fort in Fort Collins always has something going on, and in Loveland there are shows at various breweries that are scheduled throughout the month.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Brandon, is my biggest support and cheerleader. Whenever I have any doubts (which is often), he is there to remind me of what I am able to achieve. My parents are some of my biggest fans, and I have friends and families who have worked with me for years to capture their images and recommend me to others and I am so very thankful for them. I have also found community with other photographers in the area and around the world through online creative and continuing education groups. In a saturated market, it has been amazing to see wonderful and talented photographers celebrate each other.
