We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Watne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with homes and interiors and pretty spaces. I’ve been a real estate agent for the past 12 years (after getting my college degree in finance and real estate) and have seen SO MANY HOMES and realized there is a large part of the population that needs/wants help designing their home, but don’t know where to start. One of the reasons for wanting to open Lottie Lane was so that I could create a space and shopping environment where people felt comfortable and inspired to design their home and make it a space they truly love, a place to gather with those they love most. I also know the happiness and joy a designed + clean space brings to me, and I want others to feel that, too. I also think shopping in a store that is local with curated products hand selected helps people feel like what they’re buying is a little more special and unique than what you would find at any big box store.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have been a real estate agent in the Denver metro area since 2009, but knew I always wanted more. I LOVE design + homes and I wanted a way to marry all of this together. I’ve been obsessed with ALL THINGS HOME since I was a little girl, and that fire has never gone away. When I travel, I also love exploring and finding the local stores, coffee shops and restaurants. I wanted to create my own store, with curated finds I’ve sourced and help people put it all together. I wanted to create an environment in a store where people feel welcomed and inspired to be able to create a home they love. My home is my safe place, my happy place, and helping others create that is something I’ll always cherish. Was this path easy? NO. Were there plenty of times I wanted to throw my hands up and quit? Yes.
I’ve had to stick to the vision I know I have in my head. It’s been focusing on the journey to get there because WOW, this is not the journey I expected. From losing business partners, late nights trying to figure out all the “business stuff”, wondering if I’m doing it right, hoping people like what I have to offer–all of the negative talk is there, but I think that’s normal when you’re growing into something and letting this big dream play out.
Some lessons I learned along the way include being an advocate for your dream and who you let into that small circle of trusted people to help push and motivate me along the way. You have to love what you do, like truly. Not just say it, but live it. Stay true to your dream. If it’s on your heart and something you constantly think about, you owe it to yourself to chase that dream.
I truly hope Lottie Lane is a place people find just as special as I do. My dream is to bring beautiful home collections to your space, so you can create a home full of purpose and joy. With well-put-together pieces, you will be able to enjoy your space and get back to living life with the people you love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love my town, Erie, and there are plenty of things to do here! Erie is an old mining town with lots of history. Our main street is Briggs Street and it’s so cute and charming.
Start your morning off with a coffee from one of our coffee shops, Cristos and Fox Dog. After coffee, stroll to breakfast at Lucille’s or over to DP’S Sweet Life for doughnuts and baked goods (and you have to get a cupped cake, no matter the time of day!).
If it’s summer, the Coal Creek Disc Golf Course is a must (I hear it’s one of the best in the state!), or be sure to catch a concert in downtown Erie or in one of our many parks. In the summer, there is a pop-up flower market and the Farmers Market every Thursday evening! Be sure to stop into Charmed33 for gifts + goods and over to the Lottie Lane storefront to shop.
For lunch, you can’t go wrong with Birdhouse (tacos + ramen and the Dodo drink is my favorite!) or Piripi.
Erie has several breweries if beer is your thing. Echo Brewing has good beer and pizza and Industrial Revolution Brewing Company hosts many food trucks and has lots of beer options.
Erie has lots of health and beauty options in downtown including Golden Ember Salon and Rachel’s Hair Studio. Woodward Barbers is our local barbershop that offers a fun setting, and of course good haircuts! Erie has great choices for health with many wonderful chiropractors, a Wellness Collective and even our town doctor!
For dinner, The Old Mine (great ciders), 24 Carrot Bistro, Blackjack Pizza and Azteca all have great options.
Cap off your day with ice cream from Sweets Ice Cream (they carry Little Man Ice Cream!) or enjoy an adult beverage at the Erie Social Club.
Erie also hosts many parades and town events including Biscuit Day, Boo on Briggs and so much more! Exploring Erie is so much fun.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is my #1 fan and supporter AND helps bring all of my projects and dreams to life, including the entire build-out of our first retail store for Lottie Lane. He’s a woodworker and a perfectionist in his work, and it shows with all of his building skills. He’s a firefighter/paramedic by day, and helps support me and bring the Lottie Lane vision to life by night. I also have to give my family (parents + sister) a huge shoutout because although they tell me all the time they have no clue where I get my entrepreneurial spirit from, they admire my determination to push through the obstacles and make it all work! And, although she has no clue who I am, Joanna Gaines and all that she has done is a HUGE inspiration for me. Everything from her designs, to what she has done for Waco, and the empire she is growing, it’s all such an inspiration for me. And my kids, gosh they are they best. Such troopers during late night work sessions, time at the store, and being my cheerleader for Lottie Lane, I’m so grateful them.
