Meet Lisa Siciliano: Photographer, owner Dog Daze Photo

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Siciliano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe the single most important factor behind the success of Dog Daze Photo & my entire photography career is staying true to myself! I do many things in an unconventional manor & have my own very unique way of shooting, particularly my concert & documentary work as I shoot it 100% on b/w film, and I’ve gotten a lot of flak because of it, over the years, even lost a few jobs along the way, but it is also the one thing that sets me apart. I think whoever you are, whatever you do, always do you!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a self taught, professional photographer & artist. I started my company Dog Daze Photo 24 years ago, I specialize in shooting black & white film. My work started shooting live concerts on film where I was hired as a house photographer at Red Rocks, The Boulder Theater & Bellco Theater. Weddings, events, & portraits soon followed & to date I have photographed over 360 weddings & countless events & portraits. Staying true to my own unique style & way of shooting despite industry trends, and consistently producing a high level of quality work has been the number one thing that has kept my business flowing through the years. I make getting a photo session fun, quick & very uncomplicated for my clients. No confusing packages or 2 hour photo sessions, my shoots are short, very efficient, and priced fairly. I have been lucky enough to shoot newborn portraits & have that baby come back & hire me to shoot their senior portraits 18 years later. Repeat business is a key sign to success. I also feel it is extremely important to give back & this has led me to volunteer with Flashes of Hope over the last 13 years, providing b/w portraits of critically ill children at no charge, as well as giving away 20 free senior portraits to underprivileged high school graduates every fall. I also donate my rock & roll portraits at fundraisers whenever the opportunity arises. In 2019 I started my passion project called Lumin Project where I photograph people culture & the bizarre on 35mm film. The pilot series is called Who Are You? which aims to find the essence of who a person is beyond the mask they wear in society.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely LOVE to host out of towners! I have been a resident of Boulder for nearly 30 years & showing off my great state is quite exciting! I would start with a breakfast on my back porch overlooking Bear Canyon & a late morning paddle boarding trip to Gross Reservior! Then dinner would be Italian Food at Mio Dio in Denver followed by a scooter ride around the city. The next day we would go for a hike in Eldorado & Canyon, get some fresh veggies at the Farmers Market that we cook before heading to Boulder Res for an evening paddle followed by a concert at Red Rocks! The next day we would head South to Pagosa Springs stopping in one of my favorite sleepy towns, Canon City for a cup of coffee at The Bean Peddler. We would wind along the Rio Grande to Pagosa Springs where we would eat dinner at the 11th Street Station a short drive away in Durango & sleep at my favorite motel, The Nightingale Hotel. Late night we’d head to a natural hot spring pool next to the river to gaze at the moon. The next day we’d paddle board at William Creek Reservoir in the San Juan Mountains before heading back to Boulder. Our final day would be spent floating down Boulder Creek before enjoying a farm to table cannabis pairing event at Lone Hawk Farms, held by Mason Jar Events!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The late great documentary/concert photographer & friend Steve Nickerson, who always encouraged me with words, actions & supplying me with film & darkroom equipment when I first started. Photographers Tom Scalf & the late, Rick Athearn, who taught me how to print & let me use their darkrooms endlessly. Also my husband, Jacques Armand, who always encouraged me to take my talent & fly with it & has done everything along the way to support me in that flight!
