We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisandra Matos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisandra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I come from an entrepreneurial family — it was always the goal that no matter what career I chose, I’d end up being my own boss in some way. However, when I graduated from law school, the reality was different. I had to learn how to practice law and I had $165K of student loan debt that I had to pay back. That was not the best platform to launch a business from!

However, after two years of working in the corporate world, I was very unhappy. After crying in an hour in a parking lot on a Friday night, I knew that I just had to do what would ultimately make me happy — which was to follow my dream of being a business owner.

Looking back, everything was working against me. I didn’t know how to run a business, I was still learning how to be a lawyer and I didn’t have clients, resources or connections. But, not knowing how little I knew helped me to be brave at the time, and that’s what let to success.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have learned in the past 10 years that there are no real challenges in business — it’s all lessons we have to learn to get to the next level. These are opportunities in disguise.

I have had to train my mind to see the best of every situation presented rather than going along with the tornado.

For example, early in my career, being one of the few Latina lawyers in Colorado, people underestimated me. People assumed that I wasn’t the business owner or even the lawyer on the case. My looks were often used against me.

However, even though it felt painful, facing these stereotypes was actually an opportunity, because I had a very special audience to speak to — the Latina women who needed representation in Spanish.

Also, being underestimated is an advantage in court and in business!!!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friends are very active people. I’d take them outdoors! I think we’d like to do a hike around my house in the Green Mountain area and just catch up with one another. We’d watch the sunset, we’d bring some food (and beer) for a picnic and we’d come back home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, my parents. They were the ones who convinced me that I could do anything that I wanted to do in this world.

Second, my husband. He encourages me to be as big as I can be.

My teammates throughout the years — they’re the ones who have shaped Matos Law. Even the ones who don’t work here anymore are a part of the story.
