We had the good fortune of connecting with LJ Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LJ, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Slow and steady wins the race. This is a very well-known fable that has native origins. To me it means I have many goals and desires. There is a lot I want to effect in the world. And this advice reminds me I can honor my own process. Overtime I’ve learned it’s the wisest most sustainable thing for me to do.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I worked in education and advocating for those that were not able to communicate for themselves for about 10 years. I moved to another area of social work and became a victims advocate. And that lead me to dispatch. It hasn’t been easy emotionally and dispatch training is grueling and leaves something to be desired. But I have learned that whatever you’re doing in this capitalistic society is tainted by colonialism. So you might as well be doing something that heals you more than not.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Id be busy. And so I would tell my friend to visit all the best POGM owned business and take them with me to work when I could. We would sit in the sun on my breaks and I would probably bring them to mutual aid events or go to volunteer at least one.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Alexi is the most supportive and encouraging person I know. They are so validating and level setting that I feel like I can take a breathe and remember whatever I am giving is enough. I don’t know where I would be without them.
