We had the good fortune of connecting with Lo Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lo, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Hagborn Trade and its projects are inspired by and created for the spiritual and alternative communities. A large majority of the work I do is with community members who are looking to elevate their business/craft with a logo/image that beautifully and uniquely represents them and their practice. Its unfortunately usually difficult to find designers who create work that respectfully, beautifully, and accurately portray aspects of different spiritual practices. Its a service that I didn’t see being offered and felt was long overdue, and so Hagborn was born!

Mutual aid is also something that I strongly believe is crucial in supporting community wellness, and that is why Hagborn Trade allocates 10% of all design proceeds to a mutual aid organization elected by the community on the @hagborntrade Instagram page quarterly.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I want the world to know about Hagborn is that it is community-made similarly to how I am community-made. I am nothing without the people that consistently show up for me, support me, inspire me, and teach me every day what it means to be a piece of a beautiful whole. The community is my muse and my creation simultaneously and I am consider myself incredibly lucky to be a conduit in that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Go on a walk through Fairmont Cemetery and take yourself on a movie date at the Mayan Theatre. Grab a coffee at The Weathervane Cafe. Eat at Root Down or Brutal Poodle. See a show at The Oriental, HQ, or Hi-Dive. Grab a drink at The Crypt, Green Russell, or Luci’s Shambles and Provisions. Of course, visit Ritualcravt.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be here without so, so many people. This list would be a novel so quickly if I tried to list them all!

I have to extend specific thanks to my mentors Loretta and Samuel for always being pillars of support and un-ending wisdom in my life. Your lessons shape how my work moves in this world.

Rives, Marcella, and Missy for being my first three clients; you believed in what I could create from Hagborn’s inception and that will never be forgotten.

Chelsea, for a thousand and one puns and pieces of advice, but most importantly the faith that we could bring some really sick socks into the world before I even knew how to use Adobe Illustrator. Owl now.

Baylee, Sydney, and Lilith, for being the most unwavering and incredible cheer squad of best friends anyone on the face of this planet earth could ask for, ever, period. I love you endlessly.

My family, for loving me regardless of how weird or crazy my ideas and creations get. None of this would exist if not for you and words could only hope to describe the immense amount of love I have for you all.

Justin, my partner, for reminding me to always take a moment to find gratitude and pride in myself and my work. I would not be here in one piece without you and all that you do, my love.
