We had the good fortune of connecting with Lo Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lo, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Developing successful habits comes easier when you learn to develop and embrace good systems. I never really liked systems until I became a Creative Director. I used to look at them as stifling or holding me back, but when I became a Creative Director, I discovered systems make my job so much easier. Systems also help me to communicate with others exactly what I need and how to get things done. When I realized that systems don’t mean that I have to compromise my ideas or creative voice, it opened up more possibility, and allowed me more time to focus on other projects or ideas I couldn’t make time for before.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The story of how I became a Creative Director, Mentor, Author, and Speaker could be best explained as a challenging roller coaster. I’ve had so many different creative careers, and at first, I felt like I had no focus or discipline in my creative life. However, I’ve discovered having several passions and talents actually served me well in becoming a Creative Director, and now a newly-published author.

Although you could argue every career has its challenges, striving to make it in the creative world seems to present unique challenges, each with layers or levels to take on. Often I’ve discovered that having a specific creative focus isn’t enough. For example, being a photographer isn’t always mono-focused—you might also need to know how to shoot video, and learn sales and marketing techniques and language. If you aren’t careful, your focus becomes divided among several paths that start to feel like rabbit trails. Being able to pinpoint connections, continually assess the big picture, and redirect my focus over the past 20 years has helped me become the Creative Director I am today.

I’ve compiled my experiences and creative discoveries in a book to help creatives grow and find their calling. I’m very excited to offer my perspectives to creatives, helping them navigate through their creative life!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love hiking trails in Ute Valley and the Cheyenne Mountain areas of the Springs. And though I miss the gulf, Krabby’s makes me miss a good seafood boil a little less. To satisfy my sweet tooth, my husband and I love getting an ice cream at Josh and John’s when Pikes Peak gets it’s first snow cap. And speaking of Pikes Peak, we love fishing at the South Catamount Reservoir when we have some time to relax.
