We had the good fortune of connecting with Loni Unser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Loni, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Being persistent has helped me succeed in motorsports. You get told “no” very often, and it is very easy to let that discourage you. I have found when I use “no’s” as my motivation I will oftentimes find a way to get yes’s. In motorsports. If I want something bad enough taking no for an answer is not an option. I believe when people see that you want something bad enough and you’re willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen you will eventually get a “yes.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel fortunate that I get to call myself a professional driver. First and foremost, I am a racecar driver, but that has also enabled me to develop a career in high-performance driving instructing and precision driving. I am very proud that I was able to turn a passion of mine into a career, and I hope to inspire others to do that as well. It certainly has not been easy and I know there will be plenty of challenges in the future. In motorsports, the highs are very high and the lows are very low, so finding a way to deal with that hasn’t been easy, but I know that every “failure,” will help lead me to future success. I think learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable has played an enormous role in my career. Being uncomfortable can be many different things in my life. Sometimes it may be trying to take a corner flat, and other times it may be a phone call I am nervous to make. Either way doing things that are out of your comfort zone will always make you better at what you do. My goal in life and this profession is to show people, specifically, young girls that they can do anything that they put their minds to with a little bit of will, hard work, and determination.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love living in Boulder Colorado. It is not only beautiful itself, but it also has access to some pretty incredible places. I would start the weekend off by going to the Village Coffee Shop in Boulder to get some delicious biscuits and gravy. I would then drive down to Denver to spend an afternoon getting lost in Meow Wolf. We would finish the day at Pizzaria Locale in Boulder. The next morning we would wake up early and have a long, fun, and exhausting day at the Trestle Bike Park, and then make a picnic in Boulder and eat in one of Boulder’s many parks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people have helped me get to where I am, and to be quite frank, there are just too many to thank. However, I couldn’t have done any of it without my family, specifically my parents. They have provided me with endless mentorship and support.
