We had the good fortune of connecting with Macie Queen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Macie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My sister and I always wanted to start a business together so that we could gain control of our time and financial freedom. Our parents were entrepreneurs and encouraged us to follow our goals, always. Riley and I also struggled with anxiety throughout our lives, and found so much relief and comfort in cannabis. Combining these ideas birthed Moon Flower in 2019! We were ages 20 and 22 at this time. Our thoughts were— Be brave! Take chances! People often ask me and my sister how we’ve accomplished this at such a young age. The truth is, even during the times that we were so afraid that we’d fail, we still chased our dreams thinking, “What if we don’t fail? What if this all works out?” Luck is hard work residue, and now we’re working our dream jobs (and helping so many people along the way!)

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Moon Flower is a woman-owned, seed to sale cannabis company in the mountains of West Virginia. Our farm is nestled along the Buckhannon River, and is buzzing with bees, wildflowers, fruits, veggies, and of course— hemp! All of our edibles, smokables, topicals, and beverages are infused with hemp-derived cannabinoids grown in our fields. We are truly all in-house and hands on!

We started our grow, offering our products solely online in 2019, and then decided to open our Buckhannon storefront in March of 2023. Our product line has grown and expanded so much over the past 5 years! When Moon Flower first began, we offered all CBD products. Now we offer all sorts of cannabinoids— THC, CBG, CBN, etc. for all sorts of benefits and ailments. There’s something for everyone!

We have been blossoming in all the ways we possibly can while dealing with the never-ending amount of restrictions posed by the laws and legislation here in West Virginia. The hemp industry in this state has been very difficult to navigate, but we’ve been successfully making it happen for years now! All of our products are legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. If THC is recreationally legalized in West Virginia, we will absolutely be expanding with all sorts of fun products and experiences.

Our success most definitely happened in small strides, and we’re still pushing for expansion daily. In 2020, our warehouse caught fire and we lost nearly everything. Although this was our biggest setback, in 2022, The Washington Post ran a story on Moon Flower that allowed us growth that we had only dreamed about before! Our success online in the first 3-4 years led to us opening the storefront, which has opened so many doors for us.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our parents, who taught us to pursue anything and everything we wanted in life without fear. They raised us as true go-getters, entrepreneurs, and dream chasers. Without them, our business would’ve never come into fruition.
