Meet Mackenzie Tamayo | Writer, Community Advocate, Mother, Sister and CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Tamayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mackenzie, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life — is the source from which self-respect springs.” ― Joan Didion
There is so much that goes into building something new. A new life, a new company, new friendships, new perspectives and ideal. The way we transition in these spaces requires acceptance for our life. We can’t move forward without a thoughtful approach to the way we live in our stories and realities. We simply can’t do the next right thing without accepting the here and now. This breeds self-respect and confidence. We need more individuals with this ownership of their lives. This attitude curates better mentors, employees and overall advocates for community.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have over fifteen years in the hospitality industry, most notably as the Sales Director of The Pinery at the Hill and Business and Marketing Regional Director for Altitude Hospitality Group. I have assisted in opening and/or strategizing with a handful of local hospitality businesses including Sprig Eats, Till Kitchen, GOG Market and Café, The Pinery at the Hill, GOG Catering, Kinship Landing, Hearth House Venue and many more. With ties to various nonprofits in the area including Dream Centers, Mary’s Home, Converge Lecture Series and the like, I am well versed on both the for-profit and nonprofit experience. I have planned and executed over 1,000 events in the Colorado Springs and metro areas as well as received the Visit COS Community Builder Award and CSBJ Rising Star Award. I also assist in running the ‘my_cosprings’ flagship Instagram/social page which provides a guide to the best of Colorado Springs for locals and travelers alike. Recently, MAC Consulting joined SBDC El Paso County to assist with local businesses who desire to gain consulting, up-to-date knowledge on COVID-19 resources and ultimately propel the strength and bandwidth to ensure their business is successful. MAC Consulting was birthed out of the desire to work with small businesses in every stage of development to curate growth. I started right before COVID and needed to use my own strategy to pivot as I watched the hospitality industry crumble in midst of the pandemic. I am so proud of the way MAC Consulting stayed resilient in light of the complications that came with COVID.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Colorado Springs. So so much. You absolutely need to follow @springsnative @aboutthesprings @rockymtnfoodreport for all your culinary wants and desires! Some of my favorite spots – Kinship Landing (a boutique hotel)– Started and run by locals, Kinship is your guide to get the most out of your visit to Colorado. From the don’t-miss hotspots to the hidden gems, they are here to help everyone find the best of our city. The Trolley District – Check out COATI, Streetcar 520, Dos Santos, Garden of the Gods Market and Cafe, Cork and Cask and so many more spots The SE Side of Colorado Springs – El Taco y La Arepa, Julie’s Kitchen and Bada Japanese. Tourist Attractions – All things Manitou Springs, Olympic Museum, Seven Falls, Garden of the Gods and for sure walk around the lake at The Broadmoor and get a glass of wine and pasta from del Lago – I would tell you more but some things are kept just for locals.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m grateful to the incredible community in Colorado Springs. There is such a renaissance happening and I love being apart of it. To Aikta @ SBDC for being the best leader I’ve worked with… To the incredible women I office with – Meagan, Lauren x 2 and Bri – what we work on for this city is so important. To my family who loves and sees me and to my boys who allow me to move freely in the corporate and social world. And to all my sisters who have championed me, see me and love me well even when I couldn’t do it for myself.
