We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Blackwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julia, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Over the past decade working specifically on the fascial system, I ‘ve found that where you’re feeling pain is rarely the problem. So many clients begin with me after going from doctor to doctor, therapist to therapist, all of whom had spent the vast majority of the time looking for answers at the site of pain.

Your body is held together by fascia, an elaborate system of “plastic-wrap” like connective tissue that organizes your shape, structure, and texture. This inner plastic wrap suit is all connected, so when one area gets “crinkled up”, it pulls and overstretches other areas to compensate for this lack of space. Pain and mobility issues tend to pop up in the area that’s overstretched or compensating. This means in order to find the root cause of pain and ultimately eliminate it for good, it’s imperative you expand your search!

Teaching my clients about pain patterns and the lines of pull in your fascia has usually been met with, “this makes so much sense! I can’t believe no one has ever looked in this area to relieve my pain!”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In 2010, I packed up everything I owned in my Ford Taurus and moved from the hills of Cincinnati to the mountains of Boulder, Colorado. I was looking for a simple change of scenery, unaware that I was about to discover something that would change the trajectory of my entire life. Shortly after moving there, I met a lady who did Kinetix fascia release. I had never heard of Kinetix and had no idea what this thing called “fascia” was that she was talking about but I was interested to see if it could help a lifelong limitation I had in my right arm.

During the birthing process, I had gotten stuck and in the panic to pull me out, the doctor had torn most of the nerves in my right neck and shoulder. I had grown up going through the standard western medical system, doing every single kind of rehab you can think of to help the limited mobility and incessant tightness in my arm. Nothing had helped. While I had accepted that my arm wasn’t going to get any better, I had always carried a hopeful feeling that there was simply a missing piece somewhere I hadn’t found yet. Enter Kinetix. It changed absolutely everything for me! The constant, uncomfortable tightness I had always felt began to let go. Muscles that had been atrophied began to contract. And I saw more results in three months of this type of fascia release work than I had in 15 years of doing standard western medical treatments.

I still have a ways to go in my healing process, but this was the first and only thing that had ever made a dent in my limitation and it was the first time I had ever felt something resembling freedom in my arm. I was blown away by my experience, so I pivoted hard into learning Kinetix and everything I could about fascia.

I was fascinated by how working specifically on fascia was so different and by the incredible results I was seeing with both myself and my clients when it came to freeing limitations, eliminating pain, and feeling amazing in your body. I’ve had great fun in my practice the past eight years, and am excited now for an additional way to help people from afar. I’ve taken the principles of Kinetix and my knowledge of pain patterns to develop a style of releasing fascia with simple tools like foam rollers.

I have a virtual membership called Roller Club that has pain specific routines and programs, live classes, how-to videos, and a supportive community to empower those who may not have the opportunity to come into my office to still be able to relieve their pain at home.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love spending time in downtown Golden! The shops, restaurants, walking paths by Clear Creek, and vibe of the main street has been one of my favorite areas for years.

I highly recommend hiking any of the beautiful, local trails like North Table mountain and then grabbing weekend brunch at Abeja’s! I also love the highlands area in Denver. Although I’ve been there much less frequently during covid times, one of my favorite places to go was the upper level patio of Avanti for amazing food and drinks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people that deserve recognition! My husband Eric has been my number one fan with unwavering support since I started my business over eight years ago. I also have a deep appreciation for all my clients who were open to this unconventional method of healing and had the drive to truly understand their body. The vast majority of my practice was built from word of mouth by these raving fans!
