We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddy B and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maddy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
At the end of the day I truly believe that if you allow yourself to move through opportunities enough to feel what is resonate, what is meant for you will stick. With that being said, I think the most crucial factor to my success as a freelance photographer is executing with nothing but passion and drive. Once upon a time I was a, what I like to call today “Corporate Creative” in this role I was practicing photography as a hobby but also providing “commercial” images for my employer. During this time I still loved having the opportunity to shoot, that showed me clearly that I had a true passion for capturing visual regardless of the subject or reason. This same passion has lived in me through many seasons and is truly my main attribution to success

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Creative energy has lived within me since I was a child. However, my muse wasn’t always photography – until I was in college I spent most of my days painting learning all mediums from oil painting to charcoal. Fast forward to a study abroad trip to India I was beyond fortunate to take, I then took the leap to purchase my first Sony in hopes to capture the Himalayas and the everyday life of studying Buddhism. This trip was inspiring to me in so many ways and pivoted my attention to focusing on photography.

One thing that stayed true to my process was the excitement and commitment to see any subject in its entirety and to capture its purest essence.

As time moved forward I always traveled with a camera in hand and taking every opportunity to educate myself more on the matter. Freshly out of college I found myself photographing real estate and corporate headshots knowing that I wanted to achieve more “inspirational work” I spent every free hour of my day to build up “Maddy B Creates” connecting with local businesses and brands to start building up a portfolio that spoke to the clientele I was looking to attract. Eventually I built up enough clientele to fully function as my own entity, achieving what has been a life long dream of mine.

I often times get asked why I don’t niche down to one specific industry – while I see the merit in this suggestion that decision would rob me of the pure flow I get to experience when photographing an array of industries. Whether it is an artist, a resort, a new brand, or a restaurant there is an art form that lies within every business. I love photographing hotels/stays as there is always a beautiful visual narrative to tell. For small businesses, there is so much creativity to be had in the planning spaces of building a brand ethos and identity. Or capturing a new menu at a restaurant, there is so much intention and craft that is poured into the offerings – all of which allows me to bear witness to the process and produce visuals that represent.

My approach is novel in the sense that I view every client and project of mine as an art. Meaning there is not a one size fits all approach. For each client, I implement different angles, shot lists, and editing styles to ensure I am representing every individual in the purest form.

At the end of the day I rest with what a true privilege it is to capture the world around me and be a vessel to help others see the beauty in the surrounding world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love having visitors ! It is such a treat to to share all the delicious foods and amazing views the city has to offer.
First things first though is experiencing nature, I will never forget the first time I saw the Rockies and how the mountains almost moved me to tears (speaking as a born and raised east coaster). I find great joy in sharing this same feeling with friends and family who have never seen the mountains before. The drive up to Estes from the city is so lovely as you see the panoramic views open up, if weather permits I would take them up Old Fall River road in RMNP for a bit more intimate experience of the park.

Once we arrive back in the city we would grab my personal favorite happy hour in the city, Tavernetta, eat a divine amount of Temaki’s from Temaki Den and end the evening at Death & Company trying whatever cocktails are featured on the current seasonal menu.

I always share with folks that one of my favorite aspects of living in Denver is the accessibility to a diverse lifestyle – so this itinerary is in hopes to do the sentiment justice

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I was younger, I felt inspired by everything around me, no matter the space or time. I would journal every night, dreaming of what once felt like a fairytale: moving to the mountains, creating art every day, and filling the world with just a bit of sunshine. That inspired girl would think that I am truly living the dream, and I would never do anything to disappoint her.

Nonetheless, I would not be where I am today without the support of my partner and my parents. My partner has seen me through the peaks and valleys of this journey and never for a moment lost sight of believing in me, supporting me endlessly with their grounded nature, keeping me halfway planted on the ground—just where I need to be to run a successful creative business. And my parents, who gave me the greatest gift of believing in myself. I wouldn’t have had the courage to leap into this journey without being raised by two people who believed in me, no matter the pursuit, time and time again
