We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddy King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maddy, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Social impact is at the heart of Soul Connection Counseling. A core focus of my work has been partnering with suicide prevention organizations to make high-quality therapy more accessible for individuals struggling with suicidality; particularly those who would otherwise be unable to afford care. Through collaborations with #themarshalleffect and Rise Against Suicide, I am able to provide ongoing therapeutic support to high-risk clients within our community.

This work is deeply personal for me. As a young person, I lived for years with suicidal thoughts and understand firsthand what it feels like to lose hope and question whether you want to continue living. I also know how life-saving therapy was in my own healing. That experience shapes how I practice today: with deep compassion, urgency, and a commitment to meeting people where they are.

My goal is not only to help individuals survive moments of crisis, but to help them build a meaningful, connected life beyond survival. By reducing barriers to care and collaborating with community organizations, Soul Connection Counseling works to ensure that support is available when it matters most.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Soul Connection Counseling was created to offer therapy that feels both deeply human and clinically grounded. What sets my practice apart is an emphasis on authenticity, nervous system–informed work and genuine connection. I believe healing happens through relationship—when people feel safe, seen, and understood.

One of the things I’m most proud of is building a practice that extends beyond individual therapy and into the community. Through partnerships with suicide prevention organizations, I work to reduce barriers to care for individuals at high risk who might otherwise go without support. Accessibility and integrity guide many of my business decisions.

I’m also deeply excited about building a group ketamine-assisted therapy offering with trusted colleagues. Collaborating in this way allows us to create carefully held, community-based healing experiences that combine clinical expertise with the powerful impact of shared connection. Working in a group setting has shown me how healing can be amplified when people feel supported not just by a therapist, but by one another.

My path here was not linear or easy. I came to this work through lived experience with mental health challenges, and building a business required trusting myself, navigating uncertainty and learning to lead with clarity and boundaries. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that sustainable success comes from alignment—not perfection.

What I want people to know about Soul Connection Counseling is that it was built with intention, care and heart. This work is about meaningful, lasting change—and helping people reconnect with themselves and their lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Boulder, I’d focus on spending as much time outside together as possible while still finding time to relax. We’d start a few mornings with a trail run or hike, followed by the best matcha at Belleza Coffee Bar.

We’d plan a day to go mountain biking in Lyons, and another to bike ride up to Gold Hill, stopping at the general store. It would most likely be followed by a stop at Skratch Table to refuel. There is nothing like enjoying the scenery and being active with friends
.
In between outings, we’d keep things simple—spending time at North Boulder Park, walking along the Creek Path, and wandering Pearl Street Mall for window shopping
and people watching.

Overall, I’d want my friend to experience Boulder as a place where the pace is relaxed, the outdoors are close and life feels well-balanced.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family deserves my first and biggest shoutout. They have been my unwavering support system—encouraging me to take risks, believe in myself, and make a significant career change in order to follow my passion. Their trust in me, especially during moments of uncertainty, gave me the courage to pursue work that feels deeply aligned. I will always be grateful for their love and encouragement.

Professionally, I want to recognize Tsunemi Rooney, who was my supervisor at SPAN in Boulder. Tsunemi believed in me early on as a young clinician and consistently reflected back my strengths before I fully saw them myself. Her mentorship helped shape my clinical confidence and grounded me in trusting my intuition as a therapist. The way I show up for my clients today is deeply influenced by the belief and steadiness she offered me during those formative years.
