We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Hert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madison, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business has always sounded appealing to me. I have always wanted to do work that would allow me to spend more time with my kids and have more flexibility in my schedule. I knew that starting a baking business would give me the ability to do something I love and truly find joy in my work.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My brand is a reflection on who I am as a person as a mix of consistency and creativity. I tend to think of baking and cake design as calculated creativity. My career gives me a creative outlet while also allowing me to stick to stricter methods of baking techniques. It gives me a sense of control in my processes, but allows me to express myself and design beautiful things. The success of my business and brand is both due to hours of educating myself and practicing over and over to improve my skills. Part of practicing in any artistic career is being willing to try new things and go out of my comfort zone. It is important to remain confident and surround yourself with supportive people as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Durango is such a beautiful and unique city that has so much more to offer than people expect both in the winter and the warmer months. My personal favorite time of the year here is summer. If I was showing someone around the food scene in Durango I would take them to some of my favorite places to eat including Pop Sushi, Steamworks, Eolus, 11th Street and El Moro for drinks! I would take them hiking up to Engineer Mountain and Castle Rock, two of my favorite hikes. There is always something to do downtown, especially in the summer! The river offers endless entertainment include tubing, rafting, fishing and just lounging. A day trip to Silverton or Ouray is also a must to see some beautiful views and explore more of the mountains!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today without my husband. He is the most supportive person in my life and has given me the confidence to try new things and work hard at what I do, even when it feels difficult. He is involved in all that I do and only wants to see me succeed.
