We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison McElhaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madison, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I am of the belief that risk-taking is a foundational building block of success. I was raised to have confidence in my abilities, and to know that I can get wherever I want in life with hard work. The success of essentially everything I have achieved this far, is a result of the risks I have taken.

Throughout my childhood, I focused a good portion of my efforts on gymnastics training, when most children were focused on schooling. This allowed me to speed through college with my focused study-habits, and spend a year abroad in Europe, exploring life and my opportunities.

I graduated with a degree in Business (Adv/PR), and worked for about a year in the field, before realizing I was not going to be happy with a lifelong career in it. Overnight, I risked everything I had worked for and left the industry, got my NASM Personal Training Certification, and began a career in Fitness. From fighting professionally in MMA for Invicta FC (talk about risk-taking), to switching over and competing in Elite Crossfit, I can absolutely say all the risks I’ve taken to get to where I am in life, has been worth it.

During my ten years of being in the Fitness Industry, I was able to find time to explore other interest; such as Construction and Real Estate. After five plus years in the Construction Industry, I was able to branch off in to Real Estate Development, and then in to Real Estate Sales. I can honestly say that I am finally, at 31 years old, exactly where I am supposed to be. And that is very much due to the many risks I have taken over the course of my life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although it is not technically part of my career today, I have to attribute my success to my athletic career. Starting at a very young age, I was immersed in gymnastics. I learned time-management much earlier than most, as I had to juggle school, friends and life with 4-6 hours of training a day, beginning around the age of 6. I had zero ‘free time,’ but I loved it. During my gymnastics career, I overcame an absurd amount of broken bones and injuries, countless all-nighters trying to get homework done for the next day, and an overwhelming number of athletic heartbreaks combined with achievements.

After about a five-year gap and a long struggle with an eating disorder, I found Mixed Martial Arts. I quickly went from a frail, struggling young adult to a powerful, confident young women. I managed a Personal Training career while training 6-8 hours daily, all while fostering my newfound interest in Real Estate.

Upon my retirement of MMA, I switched my focus to competitive Crossfit, where I have competed at the highest levels of competition. I switched my focus off of fitness, and on to full-time Construction/Real Estate Development, while also maintaining a full training schedule. I am now ranked 63rd in the world in Crossfit, and I own Apartments across Los Angeles.

I recently relocated to Denver, got my Real Estate license, and fully immersed myself in the Real Estate market here. While being an athlete is no longer a main part of my life, it has taught me everything I know about work ethic and success. I will continue to live up to high the standards that have been set for me throughout my life, and I will continue applying my skillset to becoming a top Real Estate Agent and Developer.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A big part of why I moved to Colorado is the outdoor scene here; so when friends and family come to visit, the majority of what we do will be outside. First things first- coffee at one of the many amazing coffee shops in the area. Next we will either go for a day of Skiing, or a long hike somewhere up in the mountains. We will probably meet some new friends wherever we go because everybody in Colorado is so friendly! And then we will grab dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants in the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my success to my father, Jeff McElhaney, because much of what I have achieved today is thanks to him. From my first memories up until now, my Dad has exemplified hard work. He has always done what it takes to get it done, he molded my love for Construction and Real Estate, and his success will forever speak to his work ethic.
