We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Maniscalco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makayla, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Much of my success in life/career has been rooted in risk taking. It’s usually a combination of financial risk and feeling the risk of the unknown and choosing to believe in myself to make anything I desire a reality. I see risk as any decision or situation that feels a bit scary or that I know will stretch me physically, financially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. When I feel the stretch I know that the next level of my life or my career is sitting right on the other side of taking aligned action. I measure risk around perceived outcome knowing that if the outcome will get me closer to my future self and it is ecological (good for me, good for others, and good for the environment) then it is worth taking. Living a life of deep purpose and meaning, choosing to be who you want, do what makes you happy, and have the things you desire, even creating a career around your passion usually always starts with you taking a risk and betting on yourself(again and again). I’ve learned that if you combine your faith with living for the matters of the heart it always works out.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m the founder of a brand and company called Heart and Home Connection. In an effort to blend all parts of business under one umbrella I coined the brand in 2023. It is a one stop shop for those seeking support in wellness and real estate. The wellness side of my business offers a combination of services including private yoga, transformational coaching, and international wellness retreats. I hosted my first wellness retreat in Nicaragua at the end of 2023 and just wrapped up my hosting my third weeklong experience October of 2024. My coaching is rooted in integrative health and psychology where I have received the opportunity to intertwine my health expertise from specializing in Integrative Health in college, my 10 years of yoga practice and teaching, and my certifications in NLP, Mental Emotional Release ® (MER), and hypnosis to provide a holistic approach for people to create realistic and transformation change in their lives so they can live healthy, wealthy, and happy.
Ever since I was a kid I had an affinity for homes of all types and watched as my family created an empire and legacy through investing in real estate. My wellness business took a big dip at the start of the pandemic and I decided to follow the burning curiosity within me and leaped into becoming a licensed realtor for residential real estate in the midst of 2020. Getting my feet set in the Colorado market took much hard work and dedication. I went from solo agent, to working under a team, back to solo, into starting my own team at the beginning of 2024 with two amazing woman I get to call my business partners. Investing in real estate not only affords folks to have more security in their short term finances but also a long list of other benefits that aren’t always talked about; stability, a place to root down and connect in community, opportunity to leverage your asset(s); just to name a few. We have two homes (our body and the roof over our head). When we take a holistic approach to life one that is rooted in purpose, matters of the heart, and a big vision for our future we can experience vitality and freedom in this lifetime and I am honored to use the vehicle of my business at Heart and Home Connection to support people in both of these sectors.
I owe much of my success today to deciding to START, making mistakes and doing it messy, trusting in myself to create the results I desired, and utilizing the wisdom of my mentors along the way. To be successful in business you must take risks, overcome limiting beliefs, grow your network, and jump out of your comfort zone regularly. Resilience is so important in business as I have experienced valleys in both the wellness and real estate sides of my business and the peaks on the other side are always taking me to my next level. If the little 19 year old version of me didn’t trust herself to leap out of corporate America into becoming a yoga teacher whilst finishing school, I would have never been the entrepreneur I am today. If it weren’t for the dip I experienced in COVID I would have never started real estate. If I wouldn’t have started real estate I would have never been led to my expansion of credentials into NLP, MER, and hypnotherapy which allowed me to rekindle my passion for coaching and help me uncover the confidence to start my own real estate team and cohesive brand Heart and Home Connection. It’s important to have a BIG vision. When you do this everything you experience is leading you exactly where you want to go. I found the magic to be staying committed to curiosity, taking action in alignment with your goals, and having faith that God will support you along the journey of creating impact in the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The perfect itinerary for my bestie coming to visit Denver would look something like:
Morning Yoga Class at The River Yoga – Five Points followed by coffee and the best bagels in town at Rosenberg’s.
Lots of hiking adventures some of my favorite trails include Three Sisters, Herman’s Gulch, or Quandary Peak if they are up for a bit of a challenge.
Coworking at Nurture Wellness where there is plenty of goodies to also enjoy; fresh juices, coffee/tea, and delicious fresh food!
Sushi at Sushi Den in Platte Park or Hana Mat Suri about 20 minutes North of Denver in Westminster.
A evening walking around Rino District for some good eats, drinks, and a fun outdoor environment.
A walk around Cheeseman Park and the Botancial Gardens is always a great choice followed up with drinks at the Desert Social where the vibes are always good.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success and many life learnings wouldn’t be possible without all the support from my family and friends especially my mother and grandmother, my mentors of which I have many; Danielle Barbeau, Alicia Voss, and Dr. Matt James to name a few and the countless self help and personal growth books I continue to read as I expand always giving me fresh perspective and opportunities for growth.
