We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariana Teodoro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mariana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I lived in Brazil I used to work in a big company but I was not happy about my professional life. I always believed I could do something more meaningful and enjoyable. So, when I moved to United States with my husband who was relocated by his company I decided to start my own business. The idea was to prove to myself that I was able to create something profitable without relying on the corporative world. Plus, I didn’t speak English which made me insecure about applying for jobs or doing interviews here. So, I created a blog to share all my Florida experiences with Brazilians with articles and tips written in portuguese. I wasn’t sure it would work and would be profitable but after one year of hard work and persistence it thrived. And then, when I moved to Colorado I had to rethink it all again. I decided to change the focus and keep all the process I already had working before.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My blog was created to change the way Brazilians traveled and spent time in United Sates. When I created Enjoy Miami I wanted to show that the city was more than shopping and beaches. I wanted to prove that people could enjoy art, gastronomy, history and visit beautiful places that were not in the touristic guides. I believe it was the first website to do that in Portuguese. All I could find before creating my business was blogs that talk about shopping and luxurious places. When I moved to Colorado, I decided to do the same. I want to show this beautiful state to Brazilians. I want to bring them to visit the mountains and discover a whole different world here.
But all of this was not something easy. I took about 1 year to build up confidence among my followers and readers. It means no money or great endeavors during this time. After 1 year, I started to get some money and recognition. I also had two challenges while running my business: being a mom and survive the pandemic, a period when I thought about ending the website. But I guess when you are positive that you are doing the right thing and have support from people around you in challenging times, you will always have some kind of success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take her to the mountains for sure. Breckenridge and Keystone would be my choices for a first time visiting. I love those places and they are not far from Denver. I also would take her to Estes Park to visit the Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the most beautiful places on earth for sure. In Denver, my priorities would be Denver Art Museum, Red Rocks Amphitheater and Union Station. For lunch, I would take her to this little Mexican restaurant called Adelita’s that offers one of the best foods I’ve eaten here so far.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family (mom, dad and husband) have always supported my ideas and never said it wouldn’t work. But I always have something inside me that always popped up when I need strength to keep walking. It was an advice from a teacher called Ivete Roldao when I studied journalism in Brazil. She said “Mariana you have the talent, so go for it”. It seems something simple, but this sentence coming out from her mouth changed my life reflecting who I want to be today. My followers on social media also have a great impact. They always supported my work which is fundamental to keep going. Nowadays, I also have the light of my daughter to keep working in search of meaning and success.
