We had the good fortune of connecting with Marisa Rone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I absolutely love thrift shopping & I have for a few years now. It’s one of those things I think many people didn’t give enough credit for a while for the amazing treasures you can find. During covid I started to really delve into fashion & dressing for your body type, which lead me to dipping my feet into affiliate marketing on social media with a couple of different boutique shops. It had its fun moments for sure, but many times I felt like it just wasn’t me & it didn’t seem natural. I found myself leaning more & more into the thrill of thrifting & the satisfaction of finding one of a kind pieces. Not to mention, shopping secondhand is a very sustainable path & reduces so much waste. So despite my initial hesitation, & with a lot of encouragement from my close friends & family, I decided to officially create my tiny resale business this year!
What should our readers know about your business?
I created/own a very small business called A Cup of Looks, LLC. Its focus is on thrifting mainly women’s clothing for resale & showing how unique pieces can be styled. Growing up I did not understand fashion, & I had a lot of discomfort & zero confidence with regard to my body. I worked in many different fields until I got married & became a homemaker. It was around that time that I started to see the value in thrift shopping-not just clothes but shoes, furniture, etc. Then during Covid, I became very interested in watching styling videos & how you can make your outfit very personal to you. This eventually lead to me having a natural inclination to show my daily looks or where I found a super cool dress or an almost new designer purse, all from thrift shopping! I also have a sincere love & devotion to my daily coffee, so many of my photos show me with my coffee. Pairing that with the thought of sharing “a couple of looks” through social media, I came up with the name “A Cup of Looks”. Starting my own business was terrifying to say the least & many times I’ve thought I had made a mistake. I do still experience self doubt about it, but I keep remembering that it’s helping me grow & it’s truly something I have fun doing, so why not pursue & share that?
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Southern Arizona has a lot to offer! Down here there are many spots to choose. It would definitely be mandatory to visit the Meading Room in Sonoita-they have incredible mead beverages & a stunning view of the mountains & rolling hills. Next would have to be Bisbee! Bisbee has an eclectic vibe that showcases many small businesses that have charm & style. I’ve found some great second hand pieces at some of the consignment shops. Not to mention the food & coffee places there really hit the spot. Sierra Vista has gorgeous views of the mountains all the way around & lots of hiking trails as well. There is certainly a great appreciation for small businesses down here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have so many friends I could give shoutouts to. My parents & my best friends have been fantastic! My friend Bernadette who owns her own small biz, Essentials Coffee Cart in Tucson, is the first one who gave me the most encouragement to start my small business journey. She helped me out of my comfort zone & helped me recognize it’s the only way we can grow. My other friend who is currently building her brand in the food/health community as Green Foodie Kitchen has been so reassuring as I’ve started this journey. She constantly reminds me to keep moving forward even when setbacks arise. And my friend Ginger who owns Native Boheme Jewelry! She’s an incredible person & immediately jumped into a collaboration with me when I started my business. We got to style my thrifted fashion picks with pieces from her incredible collection of native & bohemian accessories & jewelry. My cover photo I chose for this article is from our first collaboration together.
