We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Brennan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started in the Title Insurance industry, I was fresh out of college. I had a fiancé who worked nights. I was devoting 100% of my time to my career. Now, we have 3 kids. While my priorities have changed, I am grateful for a company that prioritizes their people and work/life balance. On a typical work day, I get up earlier then everyone in my house, work for 30 minutes, and workout. From there, I dedicate the morning to getting kids ready and off to school. Once they are at school, I continue my work day. When 5 PM hits, it is family time, activities, homework, play, bath and bed for the kiddos. I never feel like I can give 50/50 in a day. There will be some days where I give 80% to work 20% kids and the next, 80% to family 20% work. It is never an even spread in any given day, but I am grateful to have gotten to a point where I know that there will be days where my family comes second and work first and then days where it is vice versa. It is a give and take balancing act and I am okay with that.
I have a “work to live” mindset. so without both, I wouldn’t feel fulfilled. Therefore, I am grateful for the balance that I have been able to achieve over the course of the 11 years in the industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As I mentioned in my shout out, I was waitlisted for law school right out of college. While I waited to hear whether or not I was admitted in, I was able to land a part time job at a local title company. From that point on, the rest is history. I grew up with a family owning bars and restaurants and I attribute a lot of my success to growing up in the hospitality industry. It gave me the foundation that I have built my business around.
In any career, there will always be challenges. But if you are not challenged, you are not growing. I consider myself a “lifetime student of the game.” I love to learn, and I love to grow. Once I have overcome a challenge, I then love to educate as to how I did it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would start the weekend at The Rock Restaurant and Bar in SouthEast Aurora for a boozy brunch. Then we would head to either Roxborough Park for a little hike to work off our meal or Paddle Boarding at Aurora Reservoir. We would then head to The Grange for dinner and drinks.
I would make sure we also went to D Bar in Denver for brunch – a Rockies Game (if it was during their season) – and then a bar crawl down Broadway. You can’t go wrong there.
We would also carve out time for a stroll around Wash Park and shopping in Cherry Creek North, of course!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to a few different people:
First- My family. They truly are my motivators and without their love and support, I couldn’t do what I do
Second – The Law School that waitlisted me. If that didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be in the role that I am in today
Third – My mother for making get a temp job at the local Title Company while I waited for the answer from the Law School
Fourth – My Mentors. Learning from you all has been the greatest gift I could ever receive in order to do my job well
