We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Mavis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was that I loved making art for my friends and family anytime a birthday or holiday would come around. I loved seeing the joy and happiness my own art would bring to them whenever I created something from my heart. But the one thing that started it all was that my step mom absolutely loves clocks so for Christmas one year I thought how awesome would it be to make her one instead of just buying one and it turned out great and more family and friends wanted one so I got the idea to start making more and selling to the public.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist from KC MO who originally had no idea what I wanted to do with my life so I packed up and headed to Colorado. Here I found inspiration and new people and decided to pick up my acrylic paints and paint a friend something that would remind them of back home. I knew it meant a lot and I wanted to continue to touch people with my artwork that I was just putting on the back burner for so long. I then stumbled upon acrylic pouring where the paint is thinner and runs fluidly over the canvas and I tried it out with my boyfriend and really enjoyed it. I continued to start making artwork just for ourselves with acrylic pouring still unsure about art professionally but other people I showed really liked them. Christmas then came along and I wanted to get my step mom a clock because clocks are her favorite but I didn’t know exactly what she would like so I asked her what colors she liked at the time and I had the idea to just make her one so I bought a circle canvas and used those colors to make an acrylic pour piece and then with a little help from my boyfriend we put all the clock parts together and it turned out beautiful and she loved it. I would have to say that’s when I knew I had to start making more clocks and art for others. This art journey hasn’t been easy for me but you just have to go with what speaks to you. You have to take chances to learn and grow I am still learning and growing as an artist and individual every day. You have to just keep pushing and do what you love and that’s what keeps me going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area /denver Co/Colorado Springs Co. We would start off in denver going to the Meow Wolf Immersive Art exhibit and explore downtown then for food we would go to viewhouse ball park then catch a game at coors field literally right next door. In denver we would also go to spectra art space where they also do immersive art experiences on Broadway and then also get Mexican food and margaritas at Adelitas Cocina y Cantina which is also on Broadway. We would also check out Colorado Springs spending a day walking around the garden of the gods for natural beauty and then go see the Colorado Springs fine arts center museum. Then we would go to old Colorado city in Colorado Springs for good food with lots of different options like pasta and burgers and then walk around and look at all the shops. If we had time we would also go to Manitou springs right next to Colorado Springs and look at thier shops and grab ice cream and buy little handmade items which are right next to the mountains.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out my boyfriend who is the reason why I even decided to continue art in the first place and he’s just always continued to push me and remind me that I need to keep going and that I have a talent that lots of people would love to see. He is probably single-handedly the reason I even have an etsy page up and running. I would also love to shout out my cousin Shaun for believing in my passion as well as the rest of my family and my boyfriends family for all the love and support they have shown me throughout my art journey.
