We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Schulze and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Social media marketing is essential if you have a small business. Social media is hard work, but so important—45% of the world’s population uses social media and more than 40% of digital consumers use social networks to RESEARCH new products. I wish small business owners and outsiders knew how vital social media is. I’ve had many a small business owner or entrepreneur tell me that that their cousin, daughter, or neighbor is going to run their social media. I usually give them a sweet nod, but know that that will likely fail.

This usually never works out well, and I wish they knew that you need to take your social media strategy seriously. It’s not just pretty pictures–it’s hashtags, SEO, collaborations, Influencer Marketing, and so much more.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m Marissa, and Haymaker Marketing is my small business. I help small businesses and nonprofits turn their social media marketing from a tiresome chore to an asset to their growth. I’m a 30 something, social media guru, and use-to-be-teacher. I graduated from UNC with a bachelor’s in elementary education.

Social media management was first handed to me at a ministry school I attended. Nobody had time to run it, but everyone knew it was important. So, of course, that is how Haymaker Marketing began. I began researching the best methods on how to grow an Instagram account and get more leads on social media, and it worked! I am a self taught research fanatic, and after that little Instagram for the school, I began managing other accounts.

Since then, I have managed social media for brick-and-mortar shops, Amazon product companies, a fabulous boutique inn in Golden, Colorado, a non-profit, a personality consulting company, a photographer, and a realtor.

I love seeing businesses grow and succeed with the help of Facebook and Instagram marketing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Fort Collins and I like a good coffee and pastry. Bindle Coffee is has daily in-house baked good (try a cinnamon roll for me, please) and stellar coffee. Little Bird Baker in Old Town Fort Collins is another crowd pleaser. If it’s warm, you can enjoy your croissant and Harbinger brewed coffee outdoors in the square.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Harmony Brown at @thriveandgrow significantly helped me have the courage to start my own business. She is a business and personality coach, and her encouragement helped me risk it in the entrepreneur world.
