We had the good fortune of connecting with Marta Sulima and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marta, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My journey to starting my photography business was probably a bit more unconventional than most. It was not something that I had planned for when I first started thinking about my career while in college. I have a PhD in Chemistry and was working as a Research Scientist after graduate school when I was unfortunately laid off. While working for the company, I had already started toying with the idea of turning my passion for photography into a part-time job that I could have fun doing on the weekends, but the layoff was actually my biggest push to completely jump into the business and turn this dream into a reality. As someone who has always loved being outside, with hobbies like hiking and skiing, I really wanted to be able to bring that into my business and help couples who love those activities so much that they want to make them part of their wedding day!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My photography business is focused on adventure elopements and couples portraits, but I also always encourage my clients to bring along their pets if they would like. I think that because my career as a professional photographer started with me photographing my dogs and collaborating with companies to create ads on Instagram, it’s something that has naturally become a part of my work! I always want my clients to feel the joy they experienced on their elopement day, or even just during a portrait session, when they look back at their photos, so I edit with a vibrant and true to color style. I want my photos to reflect what you saw that day so that you can look back on it years later and fall right into that moment. I am still just starting out my business, but I hope that couples looking for an elopement and portrait photographer want to share in my love of the outdoors to help make me a part of their special day!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not much of a city person, so the main thing I always like to do when my friends visit is take them into the mountains. If it’s Winter time, we are absolutely taking a ski trip, going snowshoeing, maybe even hanging out in a hot tub in the evenings and enjoying some board games by a cozy fireplace! Most ski towns in Colorado have a lot of charm, so I would definitely want to walk around and grab a bite to eat and some hot cocoa! If it’s Summer time, we are definitely hiking as much as possible, perhaps a 14er is on the list, and finding a nice lake to paddleboard on! I have so many favorite hike recommendations in almost all areas of Colorado! I do enjoy hanging out on a nice outdoor patio at local breweries in the Summer as well, as long as the pups can join too!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Starting my photography business would not be possible without the support of my amazing husband, Ryan. He has been the one keeps pushing me to follow my passion and do what makes me truly happy and fulfilled! I also need to give our two pups Koda and Summit a shoutout! It was actually thanks to starting an Instagram account for Koda (@koda_the_colorado_husky) that really pushed me to improve my photography. It also helped me realize just how much I love composing subjects in beautiful landscapes!
