We had the good fortune of connecting with Martha Kyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Martha, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Transparency is the key ingredient to the success of my personal brand. No matter what niche or content pillars I explore, finding authentic connection is the heart and soul of my digital presence. This spirit of community and belonging is sparked by my own vulnerability. I’m excited that the rise in video content has chipped away at the former interface of social media that was plastered with filters and carefully curated feeds. While it may have had aesthetic appeal, it left a void in the very purpose of social media: to connect. The success of my personal brand isn’t about achieving certain metrics. It’s about sharing pieces of life (in my case, overcoming a cancer diagnosis), that can provide value to others through insight, inspiration, or entertainment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I still experience a tinge of impostor syndrome when I say that I’m a digital creator, but I’m incredibly proud of how much I have learned since diving into this field in February 2022. My content informs, inspires, and entertains anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. I do so in a way that is enjoyable to consume, which has been a key element in my own healing journey. When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, doing my own research took me down a dark digital rabbit hole. I needed to know that I would eventually laugh again, feel beautiful, and have fun-no matter what happened in regards to my diagnosis. This is not to disregard the anguish, anger, and devastation I felt.

However, I needed to see a representation of the better days ahead, minus any toxic positivity. Now that I am done with chemotherapy and radiation (also, cancer free!), I am passionate about serving up charming content that can also provide value to individuals who have experienced similar traumas. In some ways, using my creativity in this way comes naturally. Logistically, it took a bit of trial and error to put my creative efforts into the parameters of social media. I love listening to podcasts about refining the skills it takes to optimize my creative content. There’s always more to learn, and it’s an ever-evolving industry!
Though this path has been instrumental in my personal growth and journey to overcoming trauma, I want to remind anyone reading this that your personal boundaries are sacred. If social media takes you to a dark place, reassess. Find an outlet that helps you feel seen and understood. Trauma can be a lonely place, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s be friends on Instagram (@MarthatheCword) if my journey resonates with you or someone you love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Any visit to Colorado would need to include local brews and nature. That being said, I would bring a friend to red rocks amphitheater for gorgeous city views and exhilarating exercise. After hiking and taking in the scenery, we would share a pizza at Roca’s Pizza and Pasta (formerly Frontroom Pizza). After a nap, we would go back to the amphitheater for a concert to end the day. Next up, a day dedicated to seeking out the finest brews in the state. Have an hour to spare? Head north to Wiley Roots in Greeley. After enjoying a flight or two, offer a French fry to the local brew cat, Midnight. Pop over to Weldwerks, and try what’s new on draft alongside their famed Key Lime Berliner. No time for a visit up north? You can likely find their pours on draft at First Draft Taproom & Kitchen. Another day would be filled with boutique hopping downtown (Hailee Grace is a must!), followed by a sophisticated afternoon at Babe’s Tea Room. My old stomping grounds of Stapleton, now known as Central Park, would be the perfect place to peruse the rapidly changing community. Founders’ Green is a great place to gather for community events. I wouldn’t leave Denver without a stop at Los Chingones for the garden guac and a charred seasonal veggie quesadilla.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ready for a curveball? I would like to recognize the participants and volunteers of the Miss America Organization for nurturing my confidence as a powerful, resilient, and worthy individual. Celebrating success with humility, and disappointment with grace, gave me a strong foundation during my formative years as a young woman. That life experience lead me down a road of meaningful friendships, a fulfilling marriage, and the transformative journey of motherhood.
