We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Olson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what do you attribute your success to?
Ultimately, our brand tries to bring more value than the cost. Our profit margin is intentionally low, our quality is the highest we can possibly make it for the price point, and our customer service is of the highest priority, because that’s what any partner wants from their team. We work hard to make our client’s job as easy as it can be by including lots of free perks and no fees or up-charges.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been a creative. Like so many of us, I see in shapes and imagery rather than words or concepts, and I get the most out of life when I get to create something. I realized in 5th grade that I could draw with amazing accuracy anything that I looked at, and I’ve spent the rest of my life drawing, building, and deigning, everything that I can come up with. As a 30 year old, I went back to school and got a degree in Graphic Design, and that one decision gave me the tools to take my art to a professional level. I only took one photography class, but I now knew how to edit, and so photography became my next medium. I started shooting my wife’s real estate photos, then her friends’, and before I knew it, I had a clientele base. Every step of the way had growing pains; long days shooting, late nights editing, finding more clients, hiring photographers to help with the demand, finding editors to relieve my sleepless nights, bringing on staff to facilitate new systems, getting an Accountant for Payroll and Insurance and all the legal stuff. Even now, 8 years in, there are new challenges weekly! We now serve nearly 700 clients and do over 3,000 photoshoots per year, and we’re still growing! Expansion, Marketing, and managing clients and their expectations, is a constant. The road has been long and sometimes seems never-ending, but the joy I get from creating something new, something bigger than myself, is incredibly fulfilling.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Fort Collins CO is an amazing little town! A small College town full of restaurants, breweries, distillers, and great people. In the winter, the snow is amazing and provides a ton of outdoor activities, and in the summer, it’s time to raft! There are lively music venues, local sports and a lot of recreation no matter what you’re into! Our favorite weekly activity is walking into Old-Town for dinner and drinks, then stopping in the square to have ice cream and people watch. NoCo Distillery is our favorite cocktail venue. The Rio is our favorite margarita. Nick’s Italian, Crown Pub, The Moot House, Inca, Rare, Little, and Charco Broiler, are some of our favorite dining locations. We enjoy smoking our own meats from the local butcher and enjoying our outdoor living room and fireplace 6 months out of the year. Though we one-day hope to buy a second home in Mexico, we will always own a home in Fort Collins!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
On any awards show, the speaker always thanks their, “lovely husband or wife” and that always seems so obligatory to me, but in this case, that’s exactly who I owe a tremendous amount of credit for my success. I like to think that I can do most things on my own, but if it weren’t for Aundrelyn Knott, I wouldn’t be nearly as driven, I wouldn’t have 1/3 of the answers, and without her support and encouragement, I might have given up along the way. Her wisdom is insightful and her talent is unending. She’s diligent in ALL things, and her drive is awe inspiring. She is my rock.
