We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Rogers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
College athletics (specifically college recruiting) is an enigma wrapped in a puzzle for the average person because most of what we know about it is only what we see on TV. There’s over 2000 colleges and universities in the U.S. alone who offer competitive sports programs, but we only see and are aware of maybe 5% of those schools. Everyone wants to drive that shiny Lamborghini, but most people do not realize that the Fords and Chevys and Toyotas are just as great, if not often times better, for their child’s future…academically and athletically.

What should our readers know about your business?
I was a Head College Coach for 12 years and then a Head College Scout for another 9 years. I jumped out of the Education industry for first time in the Fall of 2022 to work with a friend who had just taken a job as a C-Suite in Corporate America. I worked for about 4 months as a corporate recruiter and soon realized that I needed to be coaching and working with student-athletes to be happy.

I woke-up one day and told my wife that I was resigning, and I was going to write a book on college recruiting and start my own business as a concierge recruiting coach.

I hired a great book coach and editor that week. I took my laptop to the public library on April 1, 2023, and I wrote a chapter of my book every day (about 4000 words per day) . On the 12th day, I had written the foundation (about 50,000 words) to “Significant Recruiting: The Playbook for Prospective College Athletes”. We were able to edit, design and publish almost exactly 4 months after I typed the first words.

The book has led me to creating my business, Significant Coaching and Recruiting, where I work one-on-one with college bound athletes and their parents taking them step-by-step through the college recruiting process. I graduated and placed my first 4 clients this past Spring, and I will graduate and place another 12 in the next year.

I have also started consulting with small colleges and universities across the country training college coaches and ADs on improving their recruiting processes and program building philosophies. It’s been a tough journey, but it’s been a lot of fun and truly rewarding.

I also now write a weekly coaching and recruiting blog called “The Blog of Significance” and host a weekly podcast called “Significant Coaching with Matt Rogers” where I interview impressive college and professional athletes and coaches and share their knowledge with families and coaches all over the world. You can find it all and schedule a strategy session with me at coachmattrogers.com.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve lived and visited most of the states in the U.S., and Colorado has far and away become the place that I love and my family calls home. My wife grew up here, and I’ve had the pleasure of living here for about 10 years.

I love hiking, golfing and eating, but I am probably the worse person to ask about where to go in Colorado because I’m such a home body. If I had to create an itinerary for a friend visiting with kids, I would take them down to Colorado Springs first, and we would go to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and then drive through the Garden of the Gods. I think those two places allow a visitor to get a full compliment of the amazing beauty of Colorado.

I love pizza, burgers and Asian and Mexican food, so we would probably make sure to eat at Dos Amigos for Breakfast, the Union An American Bistro for lunch and Granelli’s Pizzeria for dinner in Castle Rock where I live. Outside of Castle Rock, you can’t go wrong with Poke City (Greenwood Village), Sukiya and Snooze (Lone Tree), and we love us some Benihana (Denver) and Mochinut (Aurora) if you want something sweet.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be here today without the guidance I had growing up from my parents and my 4 older siblings, but who I am today has really been defined by love and support I have received from my wife and kids. I’m very blessed and very thankful for my blood family and my coaching family.
