We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Peterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
When creating the business and brand for Adventures Decanted, our main theme was to make wine approachable. We like to say that “wine should not be pretentious, just inspiring and adventurous”. We pride ourselves in hospitality and service along with having fun. Also, our brand is about adventure: two female entrepreneurs planning experiences centered around wine. It’s about taking hikes in the mountains and finding the perfect wines and cheese to pair during or after. It’s about wine tastings and classes that inspire our guests to venture out and try new wines and pairings. It makes our day to hear how people are using wine to celebrate and enjoy life. It is our joy to share our passion for wine with others and help them to do the same.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In order to get to where I am today, I have had to work through many successes and failures. The word I would sum it all up with is perseverance. Daily, people comment, “you have such an amazing life”. However, what most people may not know is that this amazing life has taken so much work and sacrifice that can only be understood behind the scenes. It’s about helping wash the dishes and being the last person to leave. It’s about answering a text on your day off to help someone pick the perfect wine for their special occasion. It’s about sustaining your enthusiasm and passion no matter how difficult or long the days are or how challenging the economy gets. It’s about finding joy no matter your circumstances. The essence of being a sommelier is hospitality – not only helping people discover their favorite wines but giving them a true experience. Hospitality is truly who I am and what has made me successful in my business. It is what encompasses caring about others and giving them an amazing experience. It is so much more than just selling wine, but making sure people feel welcomed, honored, and cared for.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
On a Saturday morning, we would head to Adventures Decanted for brunch and enjoy some freshly squeezed mimosas and Executive Pastry Chef Dominick Marchionda’s made-from-scratch waffles. Following brunch, we would head to the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch for a dog sledding adventure or to Winter Park Resort for some downhill skiing. Following a fun day out in the great outdoors, we would bring our friends back to Adventures Decanted for Apres ski complete with a selection of over 60 wines by the glass paired with charcuterie, imported cheeses, and flatbread pizzas. To finish it all off, we would enjoy a homemade salted caramel pots de creme with the perfectly paired glass of wine.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success would not be possible without the support of my loving husband Steve Peterson. He has been my number one fan and has encouraged me as a female entrepreneur. Through failure and success, he has always stood by my side and been my rock through everything. We’ve been married 28 years and going strong. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his love and unwavering support.
