We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Landon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, what do you attribute your success to?
I arrived at photography later, without formal training in art or photography, so any little milestone around technique or any accolade felt like a “success.” With a few awards and now some commercial milestones reached, success has reverted back to that search for growth, to continue to push and challenge myself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Photography for me comes from a place of exploration. I have always been curious about the natural world, about geography and culture, and one of my favorite pastimes growing up was looking through the stacks of National Geographic, Nature, Smithsonian and Alaska magazines that my grandparents kept. These experiences instilled not just curiosity about the world around me, but drove desire to understand the creation of that beauty – what did it take to create a photography that has emotional impact, that tells a story about a scene and a setting and the things that in habit it.
I didn’t know that being a National Geographic photographer was an actual job. So I became a geography teacher instead. My passion for light and dramatic scenes never faded. I always kept the dream of “a real camera” and just before my 50th birthday I decided it was a now or never moment. I purchased by first DSLR and dove headlong into this new hobby.
The biggest two take aways for me have been simply one, it is never too late, and two stoke that passion, don’t let it die out.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Not to long ago my brother visited Denver for the first time in a long time and it was at a point where we both had a lot of freedom. Living close to south Broadway it was easy for us to get the great destinations along that strip. We’re both beer aficionados, so the this stretch provided daily opportunities to explore a new spot.

He rode his motorcycle out, which leant itself to a couple of different day drips, one down to the Springs and Canon City, the other west and north up to Dillion and Frisco, then returning east through Kremmling and Winter Park.

Food was usually at one of the local pubs, there are too many in the Wash Park neighborhood to name, but we both prefer casual dinning, sitting at the bar so we can get in on the conversation with bartender and the other locals.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is an easy one – my sons. They have both been big supporters of this endeavor, whether showing up at a galley night, or tagging along while going out with a camera. Each one has been there for me when opening up about ideas and aspirations, both have been valuable sounding boards, and offered thoughtful commentary and input.
