We had the good fortune of connecting with Maureen Dube-Savage MS RD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maureen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a past corporate Dietitian and Food Service Manager working long hours in the health care system, I received great training for time, project and people management. Once we started a family, I put those skills to work for the formative years at home. With our kids growing, and contract opportunities keeping me in the work mix, I knew I wanted to maintain control of my schedule and my unique contribution. With Nutrition & Wellness as my background, I added a Holistic Cannabis Certification to my skill set. I knew I had to create my own job to step right into a new highly regulated industry. Starting my own business was where I could bring all my pillars of health together, at my own pace.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
More Canna Care is my wellness practice to guide clients through personal decisions about the therapeutic use of Cannabis. What sets me apart is that I utilize my nutrition and wellness background to create my own set pillars of health approach. In addition, I host educational webinars, events, and programs to dispel the misinformation about Cannabis. I get excited talking about the healing properties of all plants and proud when someone lets me know I have helped them. My professional journey was the traditional route of education to a corporate internship that lead to 17 year’s working at hospitals. Once I started a family, I transitioned to contract work which became a stepping stone to starting my own business and working towards goals for myself. Challenges are the nature and lesson of life, so having a good set of skills to respond, not react will help you learn to adjust swiftly to stay on your course. This skill is critical as the regulated Medical & Adult Use Cannabis Industry is an ever-changing and complex work environment. Cannabis has a deep history of wrongful and targeted prohibition and the harm it creates to our society which adds another layer of misinformation and complications to understanding the power of the plant. What I have learned along the way is to inventory all your skill sets to keep them at the forefront to use in unison to be of added value to any client. I want the world to know that you can greatly improve the quality of your life by incorporating more whole plants into your diet.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week in the Denver area is truly an eclectic treat but one a visitor must acclimate comfortably. Staying in the city the first couple days will help your energy and is highly recommended to hydrate and tamper your libations. By visiting the many local farmer’s markets you can get a healthy taste and fun flair of each micro-neighborhood. As a live music lover, we would certainly be enjoying live outdoor music with Sunday’s at City Park Jazz, and checking out the public shows at The Levitt Pavillion. If the timing is right, First Fridays across the city showcase our vibrant art scene, especially if you come early to Santa Fe Art District and are riddled with deciding which food truck to order from. Visiting the Clifford Stills or Kirkland museum is hip and quick, so you can get to that hearty lunch at Leven Deli right around the corner. For views of our city the trails and venue at Red Rocks is a no-brainer, but a leg burner, so maybe wait until the end of the week. Guests who inquire about our Rocky Mountain Highs can visit a grow tour at Seed & Smith Dispensary, or get great selfies and a classic laser light show at The International Church of Cannabis. I find exciting and interesting people all over the city, but none better than on South Broadway. SOBO has what you are looking for whether you were looking or not. This is the block that hosts The Underground Music Showcase for three days in July that is the accumulation of Denver’s music treasure chest that we want to keep underground. SOBO is also the home of Sweet Action Ice Cream which holds my taste buds hostage for the salted butterscotch every time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out two Dietitians, Donna Sheilds & Laura Lagano who were brave enough to put all their science skills and business minds into highlighting the natural healing properties of Cannabis. Through Laura’s book The CBD Oil Miracle they began to treat family and clients to a better quality of life for a variety of conditions. They then co-created The Holistic Cannabis Academy, a RD credentialed certification program that began my journey of knowledge and aspirations to start a business around sharing the healing properties of this plant.
