We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Brook and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The non-profit world is vast and diverse. Mending Faces is a small non-profit comprised of mostly Colorado doctors and nurses who volunteer their time and money to provide life-changing cleft lip and palate surgeries for children across the world. For a small non-profit like Mending Faces, every donation makes a difference and every volunteer who donates their time makes an impact. The cost of a cleft lip or palate surgery is just $300. $300 to give a child that is facing nutrition issues, health problems, and shame, the opportunity for a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s amazing to think about what $300 can mean for a life of a child half way around the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my career as a journalist for a small magazine and newspaper in San Diego. I then switched over to public relations in the for-profit sector, followed by the non-profit industry. I’m currently the Executive Director for Mending Faces. In addition I work as a PR Consultant for various clients. I really love that I can continue to focus on a non=profit like Mending Faces, that brings me meaning and joy. Every year Mending Faces conducts medical missions to repair cleft lip/palate for children. A couple of years ago I took my husband and three sons to the Dominican Republic with me. It was an amazing experience for all.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I grew up in Boulder so (sorry Denver!), but I would take them straight to Boulder. Hiking and brunch at Chautauqua, dinner at Napa, stroll and shop along Pearl St., the options are endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m a mom of three (wild and wonderful) boys!) I couldn’t have balanced work and life without my family. Both sets of grandparents were so helpful with the boys- especially in the early years. So I really credit grandparents with my success of managing to work while raising my boys. Of course I have to shoutout to my husband, too. Working for a non-profit includes evening board meetings and weekend events, and he has always supported me.
