We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Grove and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing outsiders are often unaware of about the newborn photography industry is how much of the session is spent soothing and safely positioning the baby—not actually taking photos.

From the outside, it might seem like you just show up, snap some cute pictures, and you’re done. In reality, a huge portion of the time is spent wrapping, gently posing, and making sure the baby is warm, comfortable, and content. Most newborn sessions at my studio take 2–3 hours, but probably only 20–30 minutes of that time is me actually pressing the shutter.

It takes a lot of patience, but I truly love the process. It’s so rewarding to create beautiful images while keeping each baby calm and happy throughout the session.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is completely focused on photographing newborns and their families—and that’s very intentional. Newborns are my absolute favorite to photograph. There’s something so special about those early days: they go by so quickly, and parents are often too tired or overwhelmed to take it all in, let alone document it in a meaningful way.

What sets me apart is that I’ve chosen to specialize fully in newborn photography. I no longer photograph seniors, weddings, birthdays or anything else—just newborns and their immediate families. That shift didn’t come easy. For someone like me who hates saying no, it was hard to turn down requests for other types of photo sessions. But I realized I couldn’t do everything, and that trying to do everything was getting in the way of doing the work I really love. Once I narrowed my focus, everything about my business became clearer and more aligned.

Getting to this point took time. There were a lot of learning curves—from growing my client base, opening my studio, and learning how to run a business. Every challenge taught me something valuable, and I’m proud of the business I’ve built.

What I want people to know is that my brand isn’t just about the pretty photos. It’s about noticing the little things and giving families something real to hold onto from a time that passes far too quickly.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit Northern Colorado, I’d hand them a list of things to choose from—and we’d just mix and match based on our mood each day. That’s kind of the best part of being here—there’s something for everyone.

One fun (and totally free) stop I’d suggest is The LINC Library in Greeley. It has a huge indoor climbing structure and an incredible children’s area with games, paper airplane launchers, and all kinds of interactive activities. It’s a great place to explore, especially if there are kids in tow—or if you just appreciate cool spaces with creative energy.

We’d definitely go to Totally 80s Pizza—the pizza is great, and the walls are covered in pop culture memorabilia from the ’80s. It’s quirky, nostalgic, and makes for a really fun experience.

For some outdoor time, we’d head to Eastman Park in Windsor to float or paddleboard the river. I love being on the water there—it’s peaceful, easygoing, and a great way to spend a summer afternoon. The built-in river experience area makes it even more fun.

In Fort Collins, I’d suggest swimming at the City Park Pool followed by a ride on the historic Trolley into Old Town. From there, we’d grab ice cream, wander through the shops, and hopefully catch some live music.

And of course, we’d head up into the mountains at some point. Picnic Rock is one of my favorite spots just outside of Fort Collins—it’s beautiful, peaceful, and a great place to put your feet in the river, relax, or enjoy a packed lunch. If we wanted more of an adventure, we could make our way further up the Poudre Canyon.

Maybe another day we could get breakfast from Doug’s Diner in Windsor and then go for a walk around Windsor Lake. It’s a great way to start the morning—beautiful views, an easy stroll, and some time to just slow down and catch up. And if they’re visiting on a Thursday night in the summer, we’d definitely go to the Concerts in the Park at Boardwalk Park—live music, food trucks, and a fun, family-friendly vibe right by the lake.

Northern Colorado has so much to offer. I think you could have so much fun just by picking a few things from the list and seeing where the day takes you.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my kids. They probably don’t realize just how much they’ve shaped my journey or how deeply they’ve motivated me. Being able to grow a career I love while also being present for them has been one of the greatest privileges of running my own business. The flexibility to set my own schedule, to be there for the little things and the big things, has meant so much to me. They are the reason I push myself to improve, to stay inspired, and to keep building something I’m proud of.

I’d also love to give a shoutout to one of the business books that has shaped my mindset over the years. Purple Cow by Seth Godin taught me the value of standing out in a saturated industry—of being bold, memorable, and different in a way that truly reflects who you are. That idea has stuck with me and helped guide so many decisions in my business.

And finally, a little shoutout to everyone who has ever liked, commented on, or shared one of my social media posts. Every bit of encouragement and engagement helps me get seen and stay connected. It truly means the world to a small business like mine.
