We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Kitzmiller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Before I started my own creative business, I was looking for ways to add more flexibility and creativity into my life. I started taking classes and pursuing creative hobbies on the side. It wasn’t until months later that the idea of transitioning my career into a more creative lane even came to me. It was something I always saw as a side project.
Ultimately, however, I decided I wanted to do something that was more creative and fulfilling in my career AND I wanted more flexibility in my schedule in order to continue pursuing my creative hobbies. It only made sense to go out on my own to make both of those things happen!
What should our readers know about your business?
I write content for a wide variety of businesses to help them expand their reach online and educate their customers. I love it! I worked in marketing and sales for large, global brands before I became a writer. I use that experience in everything I do. I have a deep understanding of marketing and the buying journey, so I use my background to write content that really speaks to my clients’ customers.
I took my business full-time a year and a half ago, and it’s been a wild ride! Although I was already an experienced marketer, I’ve had to learn how to run a business on my own and that has been a challenge. Thankfully, I have a great community of small business owners around me so I have plenty of people to ask questions to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love having people come to Denver to visit! Here are my favorite things to do:
Things to do:
– Denver Underground Comedy show
– See Red Rocks
– Walk around Commons Park by the river
– Walk around Tennyson
– Go for a brewery crawl in RiNo
– Trivia at Post Chicken & Beer in LoHi
Places to eat and drink:
– Zuni Brewing
– Parisi (a delicious Italian place!)
– Postino
– Retrograde speakeasy
– Post Oak BBQ
– El Camino (such a fun vibe and great Mexican food!)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely! My mentor and freelance coach, Rachel Meltzer, is deserving of all the credit in the world. Once I knew I wanted to start my own business, I needed serious help with all of the technical parts. I had NO idea how to send an invoice or even pitch to a client. She helped me learn all the tools I have today!
