We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Wallace and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meghan, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The most important decision I have made for myself and my business was to pursue a degree in Graphic Design. I originally went to Oklahoma State University in 2011 for a degree in Apparel Design. I completed that degree but the jobs I was interested in within the fashion industry were graphic design oriented jobs. I ended up deciding to go back to school for a degree in Graphic Design. While working as a graphic designer and finishing my degree is when I created my business. Without schooling in design I wouldn’t have my business or my passion in life. It allowed me to not only hone my skills but also allowed to connect with other creatives here in Oklahoma.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Meghan Wallace is the artist behind the brand Doodle By Meg. This brand can be found in stores such as Urban Outfitters, Target, Society6, Pacsun, and more! Meghan is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Oklahoma City, OK. She started her brand back in 2016 and turned into a successful LLC in 2020. She has since designed for Star Wars, has had art featured in a Hulu movie, has worked with a variety of clients, and has sold artwork in stores all over the world.

It is definitely not easy being in school full-time or working full time and also trying to create your own business. There are so many factors that go into it. It truly takes the time and dedication to get it off of the ground and to grow. I didn’t find my style or the area of the creative community that I wanted to be in for years! I also feel like I didn’t get the rewards for the work for years as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Oklahoma City there are so many fun places! I would recommend visiting the Plaza Arts District and the Paseo Arts District to go to galleries, shop, and enjoy some food. I love taking my dogs to Scissortail Park. It is a great view of the city and a fun environment to enjoy nature in. My favorite restaurants are Big Truck Tacos and Loaded Bowl. I am vegan and OKC surprisingly has amazing vegan food!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to the Graphic Design department at Oklahoma State University and my coworkers at Oklahoma Shirt Company. They have all encouraged me and supported me so much through my journey. I would have the skills and confidence to follow my passion without them.
