We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Madden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, how do you think about risk?
What I have learned about myself through my adult life and in hindsight, what I learned when I was younger, is that there is not reward in life that doesn’t first involve risk. In order to truly connect to something that I am passionate about – growing and loving a family, building a career, developing a hobby – I must first be vulnerable. I must try something new, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes in order to thrive. In my career as a real estate professional, not only did I take a risk to embrace a profession that was new to me, but also to redefine myself at a point in my life that many people in my life questioned. I realize through taking risks to embark on this journey, as well as the risks I have taken along the way to build my business are the foundation of the growth and success I have achieved. Had I not taken the leap into what truly was completely unknown, I would never have found the career that perfectly aligns my personality, skills and strengths with a profession that helps pay the bills.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am very proud of my ability to reestablish myself as a successful professional in a new industry. I am very proud of the steps I have taken to evolve as a human, professional and contributing member of my community. I have learned that I am in charge of the mark I leave on this world and I must work hard to be proud of that mark. There is a perception that being a successful real estate agent is easy…I am proud to say that this is definitely not the case. In order to build trust with my clients and my network, I must live with integrity, hustle to exceed expectations and consistently show up for the people who are expecting me to.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always make sure to take my out of town guests to see Red Rocks – of course a concert/show if possible! Since we are already in that area, I love to make sure we get a hike in the foothills and stop in Morrison for food and drinks. I think Denver offers some amazing museums and restaurants – I’d make sure we visited City Park/DMNS, down to RiNo for lunch at the Denver Central Market, over to Central Park for a stroll through the Stanley Market and of course down to Larimer Street and Cherry Creek for some first class shopping. After we spent a day or two in the Denver area, I’d take my guest up to Boulder to hike the Flatirons and stroll Pearl Street Mall. We’d find a great Brewery or two after the hike and make sure we took in all the incredible scenery. Of course, we’d head up to Glenwood Springs or Steamboat Springs after we’d had enough of the city. Soaking in the hot springs, breathing in the fresh mountain air and walking through the small shops is one of my favorite ways to entertain out-of town guests. If we felt ambitious, we’d take on some more strenuous hiking or skiing depending on the season and unwind at the end of the day with another cold Colorado beverage.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a lot of my success over the past 6 years to the support of my husband first of all. He supported my transition into Real Estate by not only covering us financially while I got on my feet but also by actively listening and engaging in my business as I learned, made mistakes and ultimately flourished. He has without a doubt been my biggest fan and I know I would never have been where I am without him by my side. Secondly, I am beyond grateful for 8z – the leadership and my tribe of agents who have lifted me up through the challenging moments and authentically celebrated my success. These are the people who I have learned from and laughed with and feel deeply connected to them, almost like family. Lastly, I was raised by parents who were also entrepreneurs and alongside a brother who supported my leap into real estate with tenacity I could never have expected. The fabric of my life is woven with taking risks, believing in my potential and listening to my inner voice when making tough decisions and I believe those skills were instilled in me at a very young age.
