We had the good fortune of connecting with Melba Velázquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melba, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think of risk as an inherent part of growth and learning. Without risk, there’s little room for innovation or progress, whether in personal development, career, or creativity. I see it as a balancing act—too much risk, and things can go off course; too little, and you might miss opportunities. I understand the importance of taking calculated risks in shaping a meaningful path for personal and professional growth. For instance, when people pursue new projects, careers, or ideas, the risks they take—whether it’s changing industries, starting a business, or speaking out—can open new possibilities. Of course, those risks often come with challenges, but they’re also the things that can push someone past their comfort zone and lead to breakthroughs.
The key is staying curious!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am really looking forward to seeing Tres Leches Treats be THE tres leches dessert speakeasy everyone loves. Tres Leches Treats is the manifestation of a journey of discovery. I have discovered my creative space; how much I enjoy making people smile or remember these amazing moments with their loved ones just by taking a bite of our desserts. I remember early on getting a second fridge that we had to bring down a super tight flight of stairs to store the cakes I had baked for my clients of the week. I remember planning delivery routes and trying to figure out ways to keep the cakes cool while I was driving around. I remember designing logos and figuring out how to market my products within my local community and attending as many events as possible to get the word out. It was not easy. It has not been easy. And I am sure there are lots of challenges ahead of us. I learned to lean into my family, my clients and the people in my close circle for things. I stopped and listened to what my clients wanted/suggested. I dared to learn and try new things. Lessons learned:
– It is ok to make mistakes. As long as you also use them as learning opportunities.
– People are inherently good and kind.
– Enjoy the ride. Ups and downs. Scream. Laugh. Be present.
What I want the world to know about Tres Leches Treats:
– You have not had a real tres leches dessert until you have had our Tres Leches Treats. We do not skip any steps in the process and we certainly value quality over quantity. We want every single client to have the full tres leches dessert discovery experience and we will cheer you on along the way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Louisville- has this small-town energy to it. So many stores and restaurants! You can go in any of them and meet the real individuals behind the ideas. There is sooo much energy and passion in these local places it is contagious. It is a space of respite for the soul (in my opinion).
Denver food tour- Drive South/North on Federal Blvd. You WANT to stop at the local mom & pop shops and try the Vietnamese, the Mexican and local offerings. There’s so much to explore. Piñata stores? Yes. Old churches and parks? Yes. Colfax? Of course
Drive west on I-70 and stop at the little towns/communities along the way towards the mountains (any of them!). It is fascinating to learn the history of how these places became a thing and it is also fun to explore activities around the river. Mining towns, historical homes, walks around the river, casinos, National Parks, etc.
Confluence Park in Denver. Once you learn the real history and the cultural significance of this place, it is magical. Great place to walk and people watch while sipping on a coffee from one of the local shops.
Nightlife in Downtown Denver is HOT! Underground Comedy Theater? Fancy Restaurants? Opera? Dancing at The Church? There’s a little of everything for everyone for sure.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s been so many people that have taught me SO many lessons and presented learning opportunities along the way. From stopping to really listen to staying curious on a daily basis. Every individual, every interaction has been a brick to step on and level up. However, one thing I keep at the center of my decisions is that this is my opportunity to honor those who have cleared the path for me. My ancestors. So, THANK YOU to all the tí@s, sisters/brothers, abuelit@s that keep showing up for their family (and have paved the road for me). Every step you took, every decision you made has shaped my own path and created more and meaningful opportunities for me now. It has not gone unnoticed.
