We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I realized that I was missing out on irreplaceable time with my family. My thought process was that I could start my own company, work mostly from home, have more flexibility with my time, as well as provide that for my employees. I also saw efficiencies and ways in the old system that could be done differently with better outcomes. With that in mind, I knew that I had the skills and experience to start and succeed with my own digital marketing firm.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have over 16 years of experience in digital marketing. Having previously owned and operated two digital marketing companies gives me a unique knowledge of all stages of the development cycle. I also collaborate with an established team of digital marketing experts. I have strong marketing, management, and organizational skills. Through consulting and direct employment, I have developed the processes for analysis, testing, and implementation of various SEM-based platforms for large Digital Marketing Agencies.

Growing up with a single Mom of 3 boys, I learned to hustle at a young age. I would do a daily paper route, and go door to door, selling my snow shoveling, raking, mowing, or other services to my neighbors. I went to school for Architecture, and while working as a paid intern in Princeton NJ, I was asked to “figure out how to market online”. This was my first exposure to a marketing platform that would later evolve into the largest marketing platform, Google Ads. This little project took me away from my daily duties as a draftsman into a world of data that fascinated me. So much so that I saw more opportunity in digital marketing; however, I still hold a healthy respect and love for all forms of Architecture.

When I was 21, I moved to Denver and started my first business. My wife and I went around Denver interviewing local artists, recording their performances, and posting them on our website/YouTube channel. As I was messing around with this YouTube idea, I cut my teeth while working in the automotive marketing space for a local digital marketer. Digital marketing was new to auto dealers. At the time, they mostly dealt with television, radio, and newspaper ads. I learned a lot from this marketer and after he passed, I took my skills to a reputable marketing firm down in Colorado Springs. During my time there I built their SEM department, developed their processes and procedures, as well as educated the team on best practices. I was able to develop a direct partnership with the Google Partners team and had the opportunity to take the President, the CEO, and the COO of this marketing firm to Google’s headquarters in California. Together we helped make this firm the #1 SEO and SEM company in Colorado.

This was not an easy process. I was working late nights, not earning my fair share, and faced colleagues who were used to more traditional digital marketing. I was patient and proved through data and results that newer processes and procedures were successful and more efficient than past processes. I learned along the way that you can teach those who want to learn, however, Digital Marketing is not for everyone. It takes creativity, talent, time, and a clear understanding of the changing world to have successful campaigns.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to Grand Lake, Colorado. I would take my friends out on the lake, hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, and eating at the local pizzeria. I enjoy visiting abandoned towns and learning about their history. One of my favorites is St. Elmo’s. I would take them on a tour of this ghost town and show them the chipmunks crossing. I also enjoy taking friends to the Pikes Peak Pickle Shack and walking around Manitou Springs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my wife, Stephanie Perot. She has been my biggest cheerleader for the last 18 years. I couldn’t have done it without her support, unconditional love, and her encouragement through the many late nights. I would also like to give a shoutout to Greg Walthour for his mentorship and support. Finally, I would like to give a shoutout to the loving memory of Bill Fulkerson, my original mentor.
