We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Senter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was the desire to create freedom for myself in my life through working out of passion. The freedom to live the life that I want for myself and my family. I have a servants heart so I knew that I wanted to fulfill my purpose with my art. Using my creative skills I offer one of a kind custom products with a service that is one on one for the design process. The one on one of working with the client to meet their dreams of a product to bring it to life. Removing that cookie cutter box store products. These products then become a special gift or decor item that they will look at and remember the story behind it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel what sets my art apart from others with the story behind the designs. I enjoy making a design pop out and have a person say wow you did that. I love taking something old unwanted to restore it with extra added new story to it. I have from a young age been able to take something and visualize what is could be. How to build that item in my head and bring it to life. I went to college for graphic design and architecture. But once in the architecture world I learned I wasn’t able to express myself as much as I wanted to help those clients. So I adventured into etch glass work and wood work that then expanded into recycling items mixed into the designs. Running my business is for sure not easy and I do tend to work more then if I had stuck to that corporate job. But it is where I am happy and feel great. I have worked on overcoming these challenges by setting blocks of times to work and adjust how I use my time management better. I have also learned that I can not meet everyone needs and thats ok.
I want the world to know about my brand and story of how anything can come to life from that dream if you just get it out there. My time with clients is very important to bring their design to life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to not only the landmarks of Colorado Springs area but the hole in the wall locations too. There is a small little antique shop in Peyton that is way off the beaten path that has some great finds. I would also take them to Pueblo to a restaurant called Do Drop Inn. The best thick sweet crust pizza that also has a topping of Chili pepper grown locally. Its been part of pueblo since 1977 and has tons of history photos. As you can step out onto the Main Street in front of the building and see the steal mill. My grandparents and dad have been going their from grand opening in 1977. So its a place that has tons of meaning to me if we can add something to give it more reason to go there.
Also going to the Flying W ranch for their chuck wagon dinner is a must too. Then other nights hanging out for dinner at my home in front of the fire pit looking at the sunset against Pikes Peak. The pitch black darkness in the sky you can watch the stars and see satellites go past. Being out on the open prairie allows you to see for miles and feel like your in another world. I have horses and going to the open space south east of Colorado Springs to ride out on the open prairie to relax.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughters and husband as they deal with all the ups and downs of me running my business. There have been some bumps in the road of running my business that they stand behind giving that extra word of encouragement.
