We had the good fortune of connecting with Mickey Fain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mickey, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important thing we did was to identify a segment in the market that was not being served well and focus on serving that segment – better than anyone. When we started Stoneside, we identified two types of competitors.

1. Online blinds and shades companies leveraging technology and the internet to sell to “Do-It-Yourself” customers

2. Low tech, independent retailers selling to “Do-It-For-Me” customers, providing in-home design and installations service but with mediocre customer reviews

We saw an opportunity to combine an e-commerce model to leverage technology with local designers and installers to provide a quality experience for customers who wanted help in selecting and installing their blinds and shades. Once we started, we stuck with this strategy and continued to perfect it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Stoneside Blinds & Shades is headquartered in Denver and sells window treatments direct to consumers in 13 metropolitan US cities. Our mission is to provide a 5-star experience to our team members, clients, partners, and communities. As a result of this focus, our customers have rated us #1 in America, and Better Homes & Gardens recently named Stoneside the “best overall window covering company”. We’ve been named a “Colorado Company to Watch” and named one of the fastest-growing companies in America by Inc. Magazine.

It’s been an incredible journey with many challenges. Many times, along the way, we were at risk of going out of business, but our team never gave up and kept finding solutions and stayed focused on fulling our mission of delivering a 5-star experience. To overcome the challenges, we kept making changes and adjustments to our original business plan to improve. We still do that today. Continuous improvement is one of our core values.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the summers in Colorado the best. So, we might spend the day biking along the cherry creek bike path in Denver, stopping for lunch from the hot dog vendor in Confluence Park. For dinner, we’d enjoy one of the many great restaurants in Cherry Creek, such as Del Frisco’s Grille or SOL Mexican Cocina.

The next day, we’d head to the mountains and spend a day sailing on Lake Dillon. Next, we would drive to Vail, stay a few days at the Sonnenalp hotel, watch the annual Fourth of July parade, and take another bike ride. For dinner, we’d head to Sweet Basil.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to our team members who work directly with and support our customers. We have a fantastic group of people that work with our customers to create great design solutions, professionally install our products, and support our customers through the entire process. Here’s a special shoutout to our team of sales, installation, and support professionals that make the magic happen every day at Stoneside.
