We had the good fortune of connecting with MiDian Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MiDian, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
In a world where the quest for social justice, equity, and redemption often feels like an uphill battle, people often pause at the unconventional name of my business. But for me, that name is more than just a label; it’s a beacon that illuminates my journey, my purpose, and my unwavering commitment to making a difference.

As a mother of three remarkable children, my path was defined by an intentional level of resilience. When they were young, brimming with curiosity and boundless energy, I faced the blessings and the daunting tasks of single motherhood. Every day was a whirlwind of love, laughter, and endless activity, yet amidst the vibrancy, one mantra kept me grounded: “If we could just make it to 8PM, I know we will be ok.”. For 8PM was bedtime.

With the transition to school age came new challenges, but the bedtime ritual remained a constant. Watching my children immerse themselves in homework, engaging in spirited discussions about their day, I understood the importance of affirmation and encouragement. Before the bedtime routine came upon us, I made it a point to uplift and empower them, knowing that these moments were crucial. “If we could just get to 8PM, we will be ok,” I would whisper to myself, a silent prayer echoing through my heart and typically putting a smile on my face.

As they entered high school, the stakes grew higher. As Black children, their innocence faded, replaced by the harsh realities of a world that often failed to recognize their worth. Navigating complex relationships and societal expectations, the burden of bedtime weighed heavier than ever. Tears mingled with determination in this season as I would whisper the familiar refrain, “If we could just get to 8PM, we will be ok.”

And so, the name of my firm serves as a constant reminder of my purpose. It symbolizes the resilience of parenthood, the unyielding commitment to nurturing and protecting our loved ones. It embodies the struggles and triumphs of countless families striving to reach that pivotal hour. For every parent, guardian, and child on their journey, I stand firm, dedicated to ensuring that together, we make it to 8PM, and beyond.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
8PM was established as an independent consulting firm with a vision to offer programming that promotes social and cultural justice, equity, and combats racism. Our goal is to offer resources and information for the community on how to hold themselves, their workplaces, and their local governments accountable to remove disenfranchisement and instill equitable policies and practices.

Our programming will take you on a journey. One that will require that you are vulnerable enough to change how you socially and/or professionally think, act, and engage. What you once may have been comfortable or complacent with in matters of social injustice will ultimately make you uncomfortable and compel you to be a voice of change for yourself, your place of employment, and/or in your community. Our program will educate, inspire, empower, and equip you to change society. We have developed intentional programming and make you a promise…this is NOT a training, this is a transformation. Your personal experiences matter and they become the curriculum. Without judgment, we create a platform that calls for you to engage, trust yourself and others, and be brave!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Denver, CO, stands as a vibrant city woven with layers of captivating history and cultural significance. For any visitor fortunate enough to explore its depths, I would ensure an immersive journey through its rich visual history, highlighting the gems that define its essence.

First and foremost, a pilgrimage to the historic Five Points neighborhood is non-negotiable. Here, amidst the echoes of the past, one can feel the heartbeat of Denver’s African American community. We would meander through its storied streets, pausing to savor the flavors and stories of local Black-owned businesses that embody the resilience and spirit of the community.

But our exploration wouldn’t stop there. No, we would delve deeper into the neighborhoods that shaped me, starting with Park Hill. Here, we would stroll beneath the canopy of trees, soaking in the ambiance of a community steeped in tradition and unity. Our journey would lead us to the doors of the cherished Black churches, where faith and fellowship intertwine to nurture the soul.

Next on our itinerary, a pilgrimage to Montbello, a place etched into the fabric of my being. We would stand in awe before the hallowed halls of Montbello High School, a beacon of education and empowerment for generations of students. Here, amidst the memories and milestones, we would pay homage to the resilience and determination that define this vibrant community. We would be reminded of what it felt like to be a Montbello Warrior and take pause to realize that this school is reminiscent of the HBCUs that we love and adore.

And to culminate our expedition, we would immerse ourselves in the amazement of Black art and expression. A visit to a small theater would offer a glimpse into the soul-stirring performances and narratives that celebrate our culture, our heritage, and our collective journey.

In Denver, every street, every corner, every heartbeat tells a story. And as we traverse its landscape, we would not only witness its history but also become a part of its ongoing narrative—a testament to the enduring spirit of a city that pulses with life, love, and boundless possibility.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to raise my voice in celebration of my three remarkable children! Each one of you holds a special place in my heart, and I am bursting with pride for the incredible individuals you’ve become.

To my eldest son, you were the catalyst for a profound shift in my life’s trajectory. Your arrival illuminated the transformative power of love and unwavering dedication. Through you, I learned the depth of a mother’s love and the boundless potential it holds.

To my youngest son, your presence in my life has been a testament to the abundance of love that surrounds us. From the moment you entered my life, you brought joy, laughter, and a sense of completeness. Your radiant spirit filled our home with warmth and light.

And to my precious daughter, you are the embodiment of strength, grace, and resilience. In you, I see the reflection of my own journey as a Black woman. Your existence affirms the beauty of our heritage and the importance of embracing our identity with pride. You have shown me what it truly means to exemplify the grace of womanhood and to stand tall as a Queen.

Together, you are my greatest blessings, my sources of inspiration, and my reasons for hope. As your mother, I am endlessly grateful for the privilege of guiding you, supporting you, and watching you thrive. Here’s to the incredible journey we’ve shared and the adventures that lie ahead. I love you all beyond measure.
