We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Head and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The biggest decision I had to make was, to value mental health over money. I had to make the decision to put my mental health in-front of making money. Making the realization that I have to take care of my self before I can take care of anyone else was the biggest decision. I couldn’t do that before working for myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I built the shop I have always wanted to work in, I started with my lights for the shop, lighting is something that has been a challenge, so I took the lights I have always wanted to work in and built the shop out around them. The rest of the shop I had a vague picture of what I wanted, keeping in mind that somethings would need to shift as it started to come together. That is what I feel is a big part of the growth I have seen since I started off in my tiny room, is the ability to make what I have available to me work. As far as lessons I have learned along the way, biggest one would be that things are going work out the way they are supposed to, so try not to force things too hard that how it ends up broken.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the first stops would hav to be The Greenline Grill, for some burgers. For drinks we would hit Stir Coffee and Cocktails. Some of the spots to be around would be a lot of mural work by the local artists around here. Would check out friends tattoo shop The Holey Grail Tattooing And Exquisite Body Piercing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First person would have to be my wife Lexi, she has always pushed and supported me, keeps me on track when things get hard. She pulls me up when I feel like I’m not going down the proper path for the growth I want, without her standing behind me to keep me focused I would be lost. She also handles all the home stuff when it is a week of late nights and early mornings.

Second would be one of good friends, Zach of ProForm Suspension & Alignment, he gave me the location needed to start this adventure, it was a small 75sqft room that fit one chair and a sink in it, but it was the small hand that I needed to get rolling.

Third would be Nick with Brixton Barbers, he was the owner and friend of the last barbershop I worked at before deciding to jump out on my own. He has been a great mentor and lets me bounce dumb ideas off him.

Last would be all the places I have work that showed me what I didn’t want for my shop.
