We had the good fortune of connecting with Mindy Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mindy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
As a child I loved to read comics and would practice drawing cartoons for hours. I dreamed of one day being a comic strip artist. However, I ended up getting a B.S. from Colorado State University and working in long term care.

My career was very rewarding but took a lot out of me emotionally and I eventually began to pursue a business on Etsy sewing baby items. After a few years I discovered surface pattern design and took online classes to learn how to design my own fabrics. I immediately fell in love with the process and now design all of my own fabrics as well as sew everything in my shop.

I really do feel lucky everyday that my childhood dream of being an artist has come to fruition (even if I’m not making comic strips!) It is wonderful to live in a time that artists and creatives can make a living through their craft.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am very inspired by the magic of childhood and creating art that is cute and playful. I design all of my own fabrics and use them to create adorable baby bedding and clothing.

It was originally challenging to learn surface pattern design as there were not many classes offered a few years ago. It took time and a lot of trial and error to learn Adobe Illustrator and learn how to create art that would translate to fabrics. I learned that putting effort in when no one else can see it is worth the reward later on and that you can learn a lot from other artists.

I hope when people see my brand it makes them smile and adds a little bit of cuteness and joy to their day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anyone visiting me in Colorado would have to go straight to the mountains! Our first stop would be Estes Park where we would have to grab a burger at Penelope’s, enjoy a walk by the river and of course hit up one of the ice cream shops for a sweet treat.

Another must do activity is a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. The best drive is up and over Trail Ridge Road where you can enjoy stunning mountain views and see some elk, or maybe a marmot if you’re lucky.

The hidden gem at the end is Grand Lake with shopping, food and of course a gorgeous lake, This area has epic hiking trails so a woodland hike would be in order as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a lot of success to my family. My three little boys are the source of my inspiration and drive to create. My husband is always so supportive and has always believed in my success. I also have to shout out my parents who have not only helped build my craft show displays but also help out with childcare so I can sew.
