We had the good fortune of connecting with Misty Deal CCPDT and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Misty, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been an entrepreneur since I was born. My father owned his own business and I never thought to do anything else. As a teenager I ran my first company from 14 to 18. After that I couldn’t stop. I have owned a total of 6 successful businesses throughout my life all in different industries.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a private in-home dog trainer. I work with families to be able to harmonize their lives with their dogs. I work obedience and behavior modification as well as Diabetic Alert Dogs and other service animals. I like to think what sets me apart from other trainers is that I work with dogs in a way that their owners can understand. I also work with them in a force free manner so I can show their guardians how to communicate with them instead of to them. I am always excited when I get to train a diabetic alert dog for children. I became a trainer to be able to give my daughter a diabetic alert dog for college. The dog I adopted had all the problems I see in behavior modification. She was not fit for service however, I made her a promise, and she has been with me ever since. I work to make training financially and mentally doable. I want to make it easy enough to follow and fun enough to follow through with. Most of the lessons I learned were through my failures. I have learned to not over promise, manage expectations from the beginning and never stop working toward my goals!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Garden of the Gods would be one of the first places we would go the serenity is healing and amazing and one of the greatest things about Colorado. Then we would head to Marble and check out the Mountains. We would of course have to go to great Mexican restaurants’ like Los Potrillos and Chubbys. I also like to go to the state parks and spend time outdoors.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first mentor was my father. I watched from a very young age as he went to sales calls. I worked with him in the family business where i learned how to manage all the different aspects of ownership. Throughout my life I have had many people who have helped show me an industry and show me craft. But the first was learned in my dad’s truck having hot dogs from the hotdog vendor downtown. We have many conversations about the business. If I am wondering how to do something just talking to him will most times help me to be able to figure out the direction to go. Another huge influence in my business has been my daughter MariJayne and her dad William. William and I have had a relationship in one form or another for 30 years. We raised each other and had a wonderful child together. If ever there is someone needed to help with any part of my company, I can turn to them and they will show up. They are my family and my biggest supporters.
