We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica E Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica E, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
Ultimately, I want libraries to have my books on Aging Parents, included in their collections, as recommended resources.
Thinking outside the box. Introducing new ideas. Presenting only accurate information in an informal way. Speaking with a relatable voice.
For example, I’ve rewritten the response to this question at least four times, trying to get it to accurately convey feelings behind my writing concepts.
Writing is NOT a career I would have chosen!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
2005 was the year that all the pieces for starting a business to “To transition Seniors, and/or their Families, comfortably, efficiently, and lovingly into the next stage of their lives” became a reality. During an eleven-year career, I met so many teams, consisting of older adults plus “family” members, with the goal of choosing and planning wisely for end-of-life circumstances. I was so proud to assist in these physical moves into better care situations.
My heart knew that I had to document what I had learned.
2020 saw the publication of “BEFORE THE TIME COMES…” with a tagline of “Caregiving and family advice for successful aging.” Self-publishing at any age is an adventure, but at age 69, I considered it a necessity. Changes in the publishing industry made it possible; Amazon solved the distribution process. What a wonderful time to become an author.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Get everyone outdoors every day.
Hiking is my favorite outdoor activity, so easy trails – Colorado Springs: Cheyenne Mountain State Park; Canon City: Tunnel Drive. Harder trails – Sections of the Colorado Trail in the Collegiate Peaks (easy – Fooses Creek)
Eating, just good nourishment – Penrose: Coyote Coffee Den; Florence: Ito Japanese Steakhouse; Silver Cliff: Tony’s Mountain Pizza; Salida: a tie between Osake Steak and Sushi Bar and Boathouse Cantina
Drinking – beer in Salida – three breweries – try them all.
Other – the ropes course at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience; all the Royal Gorge attractions; and a stop at the Cotopaxi store – hamburgers and penny nails, anyone?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Writing and publishing is a journey.
I write because I “need” to get the information out there, so this SHOUTOUT is timely for me. Thank you.
My second book, “HOW TO EASILY MOVE AN AGING PARENT…,” is so much better thanks to the dedicated members of the Central Colorado Writer’s critique group. If they don’t “get it” then nobody will. Rewrite, add, change – yes, so three years to get it right. Just the first step in the journey. Thank you all for your time and for making this book more relatable.
Publishing is the next step, but I AM DONE. My plan to publish always included a professional resource to get me across the finish line. The NonFiction Author’s Association (NFAA) conference led to an introduction to Howard VanEs of Let’s Write Books, Inc., who published both of my books — one in 2020 and one in 2023. So many steps during that six-month process! Thank you, NFAA. And special thanks to Howard for cover design, keyword research, editing, enhancements, etc.,
