We had the good fortune of connecting with Monika Jansen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monika, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I am an Aquarian through and through and very much like to march to the beat of my own drummer. For me, that means flexibility and freedom – to work where I want to, set my own hours, and choose the clients and projects I work on. My kids were both little when I started my agency, and I knew I could not manage the insane logistics of commuting, daycare drop off/pick up, managing a home, and being a wife, mom, and friend. I would have burned out quickly.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Believe it or not, good copywriters are extremely hard to come by. We have deep knowledge of marketing, branding, search engine optimization, and website design and development, and we are able to make even the most complicated topic straightforward and easy to understand. The fact that I was able to build a small team of other people with the same superpowers still leaves me in awe. But the one thing that really sets me apart from others is my ability to tell it like it is while making you laugh at the same time. A fellow marketer described me that way years ago, and I couldn’t agree more – that’s me in a nutshell.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Evergreen, so I’d introduce them to all my favorite spots up here. We’d start with a late breakfast at Blackbird Cafe in Kittredge, preferably dining outside along Bear Creek. Their omelets are so amazing, but really, you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. Now that we’re fueled up, we’d head to 3 Sisters for a hike. I always park at the West Trailhead, because that view of Mount Evans when you go around the corner on Buffalo Park Road is breathtaking. Following our hike, we’d head up to Bergen Park to hit Nellybelle General Store, Mountain Daisy, and Hearthfire Books before backtracking to downtown Evergreen and stopping by Sweet Hayden, Evergreen Crafters, and the other cute-as-a-button stores. We’d wind down the day with a beer at Revival Brewhouse before picking up some amazing barbecue at Switchback Smokehouse to enjoy on our deck at home (don’t worry – I called ahead before they ran out of meat, as they almost always do!).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband has always been my number one supporter, starting on the day I announced I was hanging out my shingle as a freelance copywriter. Back in the early days, he would celebrate each new client and project with me. Once I became established, he’s been a wonderful source of business advice and brainstorming. And he still celebrates my big wins alongside me.
