Meet Morgan Martinez | Cake Decorator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to start my business almost seven years ago. My husband had been laid off and we had two young children at the time so I still needed to stay home but I also wanted to stay at home I didn’t like the thought of missing out on my children in those early years. I came up with the idea of starting a cake business from home, that way I could help out financially but also be able to be home with the kids. I had started doing my childrens birthday cakes a few years prior to that and I’ve always been a crafty person. So I thought why not try to make a business out of it. I had a tuff time coming up with a name until my mom said why not Cake Creations By Morgan? And it just stuck it was simple and to the point. I started a Facebook page with just a few pictures of cakes I had done with hopes that someone would take a chance on me. Now I look back at my early cakes and laugh, such a difference from then to now. My husbands family helped out tremendously by ordering from me and helping get my name out there. And here we are almost seven years later and business is booming! I now have five children ages 19, 18, 10, 7 and 4. I have managed on figuring out how to balance my life and work together. I want to show my kids that anything is possible! I absolutely love what I get to do!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I absolutely love to make my clients their own custom cakes, cookies ect. I love to get to know them as people not just business. I started out not really knowing what I was doing but I worked hard to get my name out there and build my clientele. It wasn’t easy at first considering just how many home bakers there are in my city, I just needed people to put their trust in me and then let my work show for itself. It’s worked! My work and word of mouth has gotten me to where i am today. I love all my clients that have stuck with me since day one!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I absolutely love anything outdoors! The Monument would one of the first places I’d have to take a friend or family member visiting the Grand Valley! I love Mexican food Las Marias on Main Street is a favorite of my family’s, there would be a great place to take them for breakfast or lunch. Swimming at Highline Lake is a must during the hot summer days and also the fun lazy river here! I’d have to take them on the beautiful drive up to the Grand Mesa, and if they love fishing theres lots of places to fish up there. Dinner at Texas Road House that’s another favorite restaurant! And if they have kiddos Get Air or Bananas is a must! The Grand Valley is full of lots of fun things to do for everyone!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Juan he has been my biggest supporter! We’ve been together almost 20 years and I appreciate him so much! He was starting up his own business at the time as well, an auto body shop. And no matter how hard and stressful life got he always supported me in my adventure on starting a cake business. He helped me buy some of the bigger items i needed such as my stand mixer. My older children helped me out in those first few years as well with helping watch the little ones while i got orders done. And a shout out to all my clients without them I wouldn’t be where I am today!
