We had the good fortune of connecting with Moriah Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moriah, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
JayBird Events is focused on the events of future generations. Not only do I focus my planning and coordination on eco – conscious choices such as composting and reducing the ecological footprint of each event, but I also run a paid internship for young people looking to get into the events industry. There are so many great minds in our community that are ready to be of assistance to couples getting married but are unsure how to get their foot in the door in the industry. I train them in the basics of wedding and event planning and educate them on the ways to keep eco – consciousness in their minds as they go out into the industry to bigger and better opportunities!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am extremely lucky to be starting this business with the fantastic individuals at the non-profit One Good Turn. I began working for them in September of 2023 after meeting the Director of Operations at a styled shoot for my old company! I began running their event venue, Rag + Bale, which unfortunately will be closing it’s doors on August 31 for reasons outside of our control. When it became apparent that we weren’t going to be able to assist people with hosting their events at the venue they collaborated with me to create JayBird Events!
I’ve been in the wedding and events industry in Denver for 5 years now, after 6 years of working in restaurants. Honestly working in restaurants was much harder than working in weddings, there are way more restaurant customer-zillas than there are bridezillas! I ran a faux flower rental company in the area for 4 years and was able to navigate COVID as well as a yearly sum of around 200 weddings and events! Even though there were some absolutely WILD stories from that time I still look back on it with incredible fondness.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am REALLY enjoying exploring The Highlands recently. That area of Denver has so much to offer when it comes to shops, food, and drinks. There are also some cute outdoor parks that always have great people hanging out! I also recently got to tour Meow Wolf in a professional manner for potential events there and they were kind enough to show me the exhibit, I will definitely be going back with friends soon!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
JayBird Events would not exist without the life and unfortunate passing of my father, Steve Nelson. Not only was he a true girl dad, expressing interest in the activities and topics my sister and I enjoyed, but he was also a legitimate environmentalist. We spent every summer outside going white water rafting and driving to visit all the National Parks we could. Anytime we left a campsite he would send me on micro-trash duty where I had to pick up any trash I found, whether or not we left it there. It was very important to him that we left the natural world better than we found it. This is a large pillar of JayBird Events and I wouldn’t have had that mindset were it not for him. Since his passing in 2021 I have strived to honor his memory by doing what I can for our Earth and the people on it.
