We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas Paschal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicholas, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was in the midst of selling another business and my brother was working at Tilray. I had been exposed to the space in the past through ancillary partners but not directly. I started asking questions about data compliance at LP’s and how they would manage cross-provincial problems in the marketing world. We found a lucrative gap and we engaged our engineering teams to build what Alpine IQ is today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an entrepreneur and technologist with year-after-year success in achieving revenue, profit, and business growth objectives within startup, turnaround, and rapid change conditions. One of my greatest achievements is being the CEO of Alpine IQ; a customer data, marketing, and analytics cloud designed specifically for the cannabis industry. Our goal since day one has been to bring world-class technology to an industry ripe for disruption. In February 2020, we publicly launched Alpine IQ with the goal to build technology that would genuinely fuel highly regulated markets with retail and brand infrastructures.

When we first entered the market, it became clear that loyalty programs run with text messages meant everything to retailers and the reason behind that was that it was one of the only marketing tactics available. Mailchimp, Klaviyo, and Twilio continued to stand on the wrong side of history and kick cannabis dispensaries to the curb. The market sentiment that texting customers is the best way to build loyalty, AOV, and repetitive visits over other channels ended up being a heavily false narrative pushed by our early competitors stuck in the stone age.

Over the years one of the biggest challenges has been diversifying the marketing budgets of retailers stuck in the past and missing out on ROI. The reality is that 70-80% of texts are not engaged and other channels such as native app push notifications, email, and postcards can be just as or even more effective.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out the Alpine IQ team! We are an imaginative team that embraces openness throughout our company’s culture. Our team consists of driven professionals who share their innovative ideas, information, and feelings to propel Alpine IQ to the next level. Every team member is entrusted with speaking their minds regardless of their seniority, department, or financial risk a topic might present them. We passionately pursue being experts at building, supporting, and selling software. We strive to stay lean, have small teams, minimize bureaucracy, eliminate productivity hurdles, and keep our best developers as team-leaders.
