Meet Phil Dumontet | Husband to Alexa Squillaro | Father of 2 | CEO, Brooksee | Founder, Boulderthon | Forbes 30 Under 30

We had the good fortune of connecting with Phil Dumontet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phil, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I have a 3.5 year old son, Dante, and 8 month old daughter, Chiara. Clearly I’m still in the very early innings of parenthood, but the most important thing I have done is remember to lead by example.
Your children are always watching. Ed Mylett has a great line on this: everything that kids learn is “caught”, not “taught”. Actions truly do speak infinitely louder than words.
If I want my children to treat other kids with respect, then they better see their Dad doing that every day. If I want my kids to know they are capable of being anything in life and to reach for the stars, they better see their Dad achieving his wildest dreams and building his dream life. If I want my kids to take 100% responsibility for their lives, to be the creator of their lives, they should see their Dad fully owning both his successes and failures.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the CEO of Brooksee, one of the top 10 largest endurance event organizers in the US, and an industry-leading technology company.
For me, it’s a dream job. I am an avid runner, having run 17 marathons, going from a 4:15 marathon to a 2:42 at NYC last year. I believe that marathons are among the greatest theaters of human inspiration that exist; they bring people together, and are some of the most fun, memorable & inspiring days of the year in cities, for runners and spectators alike.
Running is my passion, and I see the power that it has to inspire & transform lives firsthand. At Brooksee, my North Star Metric is our number of participants – the number of memories and experiences we create every time someone comes across our finish lines, accomplishing a massive goal they once dreamed of. It’s an incredible honor.
I moved from New York to Boulder in 2017 with the vision of creating a world-class marathon in Boulder, in a new signature downtown format that’s never been done before. After 4 years of concept creation, course development, lobbying, and team organization, I produced the first edition in 2021 with 1600 runners. Today, Boulderthon, is the fastest-growing and top-rated marathon in the country. The race has doubled every year for the last 4 years, and was named among the top 10 races in the US by USA Today, bringing in over 10,000 runners from all 50 states and 22 countries to the beautiful running mecca of Boulder.
Prior to Boulderthon, I started a restaurant delivery platform for restaurants who wouldn’t otherwise deliver (before DoorDash and Uber Eats existed). I worked closely with my brother, who is one of the smartest and talented people I know. We had a great synergy between our complimentary skill sets, and ultimately sold to GrubHub in 2017.
Each business has taught me amazing lessons and fueled my personal development. Today, I am incredibly grateful to leverage my strengths and leverage my passion to grow the depth & breadth of the Brooksee portfolio.
One of the greatest lessons that is a common thread through all my experiences is that you are your greatest asset. It’s all you have through it all and no one can take it from you. Invest in your skills and experiences, and learn (and pay to learn if needed) as quickly as you can. At the end of the day, if you approach it with the right mindset, there is no losing. You either win or you learn, and there are seasons of learning and seasons of earning. I firmly believe that I am always coming out with a W in the character that I build with each experience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Boulder is an outdoor paradise, spanning well beyond the race. Boulderthon is a small slice of it and just a taste of how magnificent this area is.
There is no shortage of hikes, trails, and beautiful places to explore. Hike Sanitas or Green Mountain, then enjoy our amazing restaurants (Bobby Stuckey sets the standard). Visit Chautauqua Park and see the Flatirons glow in the sunshine while you breathe in crisp mountain air. Grab a drink at the top of Avanti or Corrida and soak in the gorgeous views. Walk Downtown on Pearl Street (where you crossed the finish line at Boulderthon) and visit our majority-locally owned shops. Soak it all in and enjoy the beauty of Boulder!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to my Mom & Dad. My Mom taught me the unlimited power of bringing an enthusiasm to life, and the positivity to accomplish and create beautiful things; my Dad, for bringing a calmness and coolness to life that I helps me navigate challenges and makes me a better parent.
Shout out to my wife, who truly empowers and challenges me to be a better person. She brings a level of joy, laughter and love to my life that I didn’t know was possible. I couldn’t imagine a more supportive and beautiful person to share my life with and build a family together.
Shout out to my kids: Dante and Chiara. Dante literally means ‘enduring’ , ‘strong’, and Chiara, ‘shining, clarity in sight’. They are my rock and beacon, my ultimate inspirations. I find tremendous strength and clarity from them both.
Shout out to my brother, who believed in me and encouraged me to start my first business (directly out of college). I appreciate his ability to recognize and provide an opportunity for me to build, deploy and sharpen my strengths.
Shout out to Alex Hormozi, who has compressed decades of brilliant wisdom and experience into his podcast and books; my only regret is not paying down my ignorance time debt earlier and finding him earlier.
Shout out to Ed Mylett, who brings a perspective and attitude to life that I look to emulate every day.
