Meet Nick Mcgough | Outdoor Enthusiast

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Mcgough and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Moving to Denver, I hoped to find an existing LGBTQIA+ outdoor community, but quickly realized there was a real void. During a solo hike, I began to consider why this was the case and recognized a lack of exposure to outdoor activities within the queer community. This inspired me to take action and create The Out Scout—a community dedicated to providing education and building a safe, judgment-free space where all LGBTQIA+ individuals can connect with nature and experience its many benefits. While we’re currently focused on building a strong local community through simple meetups, our ultimate goal is to expand our impact by becoming a non-profit that provides vital outdoor education and resources to youth and underserved groups.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career has taken an interesting turn in recent years. While I currently work for a legal technology software company, my background is quite different. I spent over 30 years as a professional dancer, which instilled in me a passion for physical activity and well-being. Retiring from dance nearly a decade ago presented a significant lifestyle adjustment, highlighting my need to connect with the outdoors as often as possible. As a queer individual, I recognized a lack of truly inclusive outdoor spaces, which inspired me to create The Out Scout and build a community dedicated to empowering LGBTQ+ individuals to experience the transformative power of nature.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First and foremost, we will be going to Rocky Mountain national park for a hike, most likely, Mills Lake since its not too long and not a ton of elevation gain and the views are stunning. Then stop in Estes Park on the way back and check out the cute shops along the main drag.
Definitely check out Longmont. The food and beer scene is amazing. Smaller than Boulder but much more charm. Rosalee’s Pizza is a must and then check out Wibby Brewery or St Vrain Cidery for some delicious and award winning drinks.
In Denver I’d go to the Botanical gardens, explore the art and shops around Rino and finish the night at ESP Vinyl.
Heading south I’d check out Garden of the Gods and if you’re looking for another challenge, race your friends up the Manitou Incline.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Out Scout has been a dream of mine for a few years. Although my first attempt to launch it solo didn’t quite work out, I’m thrilled to say it’s finally happening, thanks to the incredible support of some amazing friends. I especially want to shout out Hanna and Diego, who have been absolute champions in helping me bring this vision to life.
