We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Mejia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I would say one thing that has inspired me would be growth. Since I started tattooing my drawing skills have improved significantly every year. To look back and see the improvements and better quality of work is very inspirational . Seeing other artists who have more experience/skill can also be very inspiring as it shows how much room for improvement there can be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am always very thankful to be able to tattoo. It is a different experience with every tattoo. I enjoy getting to know the people I am tattooing. Usually we end up getting into some interesting conversation during the tattoo session. Also people always come with the cool ideas for tattoos, we always end up working together to create a beautiful final piece.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A fun week would definitely include getting a tattoo from me. Maybe going to a restaurant or bar down Broadway. A basketball game or concert at Red Rocks would be fun.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course there are a ton of people who have helped me to get where I am today. Many people who I’ve learned from and have gotten support from in the past few years. One big thing that helped me was the book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards. This book was very helpful in understanding drawing and how creativity works. Understanding how to use your right side of the brain to be more creative and artistic. I always recommend this book to anyone looking to learn to draw.
