We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Magness and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking was very foreign to me prior starting my photography business. It wasn’t until after becoming an entrepreneur that I realized taking risks was half of my new career. Every door I open leads to another hurdle, another jump I have to take, another decision I am uncomfortable about. But that’s exactly where I want to be, uncomfortable. Because that means I am growing! I remind myself constantly of how I got here. Was I nervous? Yes. Did I freak out? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes! Without the constant risks, there would be no growth. Taking the leap and diving head first into my passion has given me so much freedom and fulfillment in my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My goal in life has always been to say that I am a professional photographer and I am absolutely thrilled to have made it here! Family photography is my focus and is closest to my heart as it applies to the season I am in as well. When I found out I was pregnant with my first born I knew that I wanted to stay home with him but I also recognized the extroverted side of me not prepared to let go of work or adult interaction completely. My son was born and so was my official business! The challenges and advantages are pretty hand in hand with a “mompreneur” as I am able to stay home and get so much work done one day, while not getting a thing done the next besides, you know, raising babies! I would not change any part of it though and I have learned to mostly juggle my business while the little ones sleep. What I hope to show the world with my brand isn’t my story though, it is my client’s story! That is my goal. Thousands of pictures of frozen laughter printed in my families homes all around Colorado.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Colorado has some incredible places to check out and I definitely take full advantage of the outdoors! (More so before I had my babies but we can pretend.) My favorite place to go is Rampart Range near Sedalia. There are a ton of awesome dirt biking trails and huge camp sites. For a day full of snowboarding, Keystone and Copper mountain are my favorite ski resorts. Hiking a 14er is a must as well. It might take awhile but what an incredible experience! For a city adventure I would have to stop by Coors Field for a day game and afterwards hang out at really any brewery. You can’t go wrong!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband deserves endless amounts of recognition for my business. His constant push, praise, advice, and belief in me all around is my foundation. Photography has been a life long passion of mine, everyone in my family knew it and encouraged it. My husband recognized that early on, gave me my first DSLR camera and said, “Now you can be a photographer.” He has bet on me since day one and his support opened the door for me. My mother-in-law watches my boys while I have sessions, allowing me open availability for my clients. She is truly selfless and I am so grateful for all that she does for our family! I could not run this business without her help. And Katie Bradshaw with KB Digital Designs mentored me and helped me out more times than I can count with technical, business, equipment, and all other side of things! She honestly taught me how to take a picture and how to own my brand in my own way. The saying “It takes a village” applies to your business baby as well, right? I am forever thankful for mine.
